Hey everyone, just checking in I'll tell you a little about me and my ride so you know what's going on. I'm 19, not yet in college not making much, so my spending is definitly limited. Ijust bought my MR2 A few weeks ago, and the guy I bought it from screwed me really bad! When I test drove the car, it ran fine- and for the next few days. The batt. was dead when I bought it, but he said it just handn't been driven in a while. So we jumped it off and I gave him $3500 for it. When I got it home(about a 50 mi drive) then batt. was still dead-it would run if we jumped it. So I bought a new batt. and then it ran fine- for two days' in which time i put approx. 250mi on it. Then I noticed the gauges acting screwy and then the batt. meter started dropping and then the car died. The guy who helped me push it into a gas station said to check the alt. so I did, and to my amazement I found that the alt. was not even bolted to the bracket! It was just lying there with the belt half spinning it.
I hadn't discovered this board yet, so about 5 hours later I got the alt. out had advance auto test it(it was fine) and went to a hardware store, got $2.50 worth of bolts and lock washers and put it back in. O.K. Here's were the problem started. Berfore I cranked it I checked the oil; it was low so I added enough oil to bring it up to about 1\2 to 2\3 full. Then I tried cranking it. It fired up fine, but very soon it started smoking - bad.I figured it would stop soon, but it kept on and started running really rough, then died. I checked the plugs and they were black, but not wet. it was the threads and the part not in the engine that had wet oil on it. The next day I put new plugs in it(by the way, the old plugs were not even adjusted right- they were @ about .1 mm!) it cranked with new plugs, but I had to give it gas to keep it running, and it smoked just like before. I tried driving it up the road, butonly went a mile or so and had to come back for fear of it stalling. I got it back to the house, wereupon it died and hasn't cranked since. I should add that the back of the engine block has oil all over it and the valve cover gasket is seeping too. Also I checked the air fliter and it was black. and missing about 1/3 of it.(wonder were that went ) OK I know this is a really long post but if any body out there has any idea wats wrong pleeeeeease!!!! let me know! any help would be awsome. thanks in advance and thanks for this great site I look forward to meeting everyone! |

Well it sounds like your valve cover gasket needs replaced for one. Is this an NA or Turbo? Second you should have filled the oil up, not 1/2 way, half way is low especially for the 5SFE if that is what you have.
Is it trying to crank? You said it has not cranked but I'm guessing you mean started up. If theres enough oil down along the plugs it may not be getting much of a spark.

The guys @ NOPI told me to drain the oil and fill it and all the fluids up to normal, clean the plugs, and then see what happens; thats what i'm going to try when i get home. By the way thank for the welcomes and advice!! I've got big plans for this MR2, but right know i just want it to run. ![]() |

Running! (sort of)
OK Sirc, I know my grammer sucks, but I'm working on it.
Alright; here is the latest. I drained the oil, topped off the coolant( it was almost full), filled the oil all the way up to the full line(about 3.9 Quarts), and cleaned the plugs with a wire brush. The car fired up on the first try, and although it smoked like crazy, it wasn't running as rough as before. So I drove it down the road a little but almost immedietly a belt started squealing. I turned arround and healed back, but before I got back the sqealing stopped. Not surprisingly the alt. belt had burned through. BUT: here's the thing- with the car still running, I went back to check the belt, and the car had stopped smoking! There wasn't even a little right at the pipes! ![]() So now I'm really confused. I got a new belt and I'm going to try to install it today- I'll update that later. But if anyone has any ideas what it could be please let me know! |
