I'm not sure but when you do buy one please let other mkiii owners that there is an mkii and mki out there too. When I've approached woman mkiii drivers about the mr2 and meets they usually seem disinterested. Maybe it's the demographic.

Welcome !

Precat failure was common with early MKIII MR2s. I would say your best bet is to buy a car that has had religious Toyota dealer servicing, as those shops were well aware of the problems.

Thanks for showing up Make sure to show us some pics of the Spyder when you get one. I love those things

It's a pretty new car, and a Toyota, so reliability-wise, you're in good shape. Just look for somebody who's taken good care of their car and not abused it. Good luck in your search, and welcome to the board.

IIRC This issue developed on the 2000/2001 (maybe 2002?) at around 60-70k. Basically the material in the precat would deteriorate, and had a possibility of getting back into the engine. Which, would cause alot of problems. One of the simple solutions to this problem was to simply "gut the cat", which involved removing the catalytic materials that deteriorated.
