I'm a newby...

Hello all, first off my name is Evan ( as you can see haha ) just thought I would say hi to the site, i do have one question though has anyone had any big problems with their 2nd gen Mr2? I have heard a few people say that they have a lot of wiring problems along with transmission problems. I know this probably sounds stupid to a lot of you because by your entries you guys obviously put your Mr2's at very high standards. I just am scared about that being i just bought 93t and I am a little worried at the moment. In advance thank you all for answering my question.

If you have a 93T, you have the upgraded transmission with dual synchros, so they'll last longer and have smoother shifting than the 91-92. So you should be eased a bit there...Otherwise, I have no problems with my MR2, and it's a '91T, although I did swap the tranny for smoother shifting. It's as reliable as ever and I'm modding it...I'm not so sure about wiring problems though since I've never ran into it, but someone here will chime in.

Welcome to the Board!

As far as i know, there are really only 1 common wiring problem, and a very rare wiring issue with the MR2.

The common wiring problem is in the door harness, as our cars are getting a little old, so does the wiring. Sometimes the wiring in the door harness gets old and broken from the door opening and closing a lot. Its not an expensive problem as you need to take out the wiring harness and reattach the wires that broke. A little time consuming but not expensive at all. Maybe 3 hours to fix and a total cost of $5 bucks for some wire and connectors.

The very rare wiring problem with our cars, and I mean rare, is the ground wires on the engine. They too can get old and cause a few issues with getting a good ground on your engine. This is easily fixable by simply replacing the ground wires with new heat sheilded wire. Not a big deal and should maybe take 2 hours of your time and $20 bucks for heat sheilded wire, if that.

Your tranny - Is strong as hell! The only thing I would do is replace the fluid in the tranny with some penzoil synchromesh. This is just a general maintenance item. The price.....if you do it yourself, i think i spent $35 bucks for the fluid and a new bolt gasket.

I'm sick of these civics and integra's thinking they are gods of the street scene....so i'm trying to get away from that and find some good information about my beautiful car.

Are you looking for a JDM swap or just any 3SGTE you can get your hands on?

I know of someone in Utah that can source an engine for you and do the swap in 1 day. If your interested, PM me. I used to live in Utah and started the Utah MR2 Owners Club, www.u-moc.com

A JDM 3rd Gen will run you roughly $3500 or so plus $1500 for install.

He can probably get other engines if that price is a little steep for you or your looking for something else. Thats about the going rate though for 3rd Gens.

The guy I know has done many many swaps into MR2s, in fact he has owned something like 48 MR2s in the past 15 years.

www.mr2oc.com has a group buy, but I don't know if it's still open, but you can check it out for the spoiler...

Seems like you're looking for a Gen3 engine, but I think it'll run $500-100 higher than just a Gen2. Depends on what you really want to do with your motor, saying the 245 it's a done deal, but if you mod it, a Gen3 wouldn't be that much greater than a Gen2, if at all...It just comes with a better turbo, but if you change it, it doesn't matter then...More aggressive timing, but you can do all that with a ROM Tune from ATS or tune it with an EMS...

yeah that's what i was thinking just thought i'd throw a few questions out haha. but yeah i will probably just go with the gen2 and go with the t-78 but that's not for a while. that's more than half what i bought my car for lol

*** correction for that statement: this is not just a car...it's mr2...come on now sorry! i should know better by now haha ***
