new with project in mind
Hey hows it going. ive been visiting these boards for almost a week now. I have to say i love it so far. I think ill get right to the point. Im (hopefully) buying my friends brothers 91 Mr2 NA next month. The thing is, it doesnt run. Dont know what the problem is, but if i cant fix it in auto class then ill just buy a new engine for it. I want a 3sgte. thats for sure. So what would i need for the swap? My ideal situation would be to buy a JDM 3sgte with everything i need for around 2000 plus the cost of shipping. But if i could id love to get my hands on a clip. What else would i need for the swap? a new engine mount? Im getting the duece for cheap, 1500. so yeah. any opinions would be greatly appreciated

I think the best bet is to buy a rear clip. It may cost more but you will have just about everyhting you need right there. If you can fix it "great". Is it in good shape? Oh BTW welcome to the board!

Where are you located? If you are located near one of the places you could save on shipping. There are several places you can choose from to select a rear clip. But a lot of those choices rely on which type of swap you want. You already said you want a 3sgte...the Gen II will cost around 2500 and the Gen II will be in the area of 3500. Those are the normal costs I have seen depending on the stuff already done to the engine.

i live on socal. i dont really know whichgen 3sgte i want. i hear that after both engine get to about 300 hp the differences dissapear. Whichever one i can find a better deal on at the time i'll buy. I still have a month before i buy the car, and then i can decide on the rear clip thanks for all the replys

Greetings all, from Ohio. I'm a long time car nut, recently an owner of my first Toyota, an 86 MR2 Mk1, which I purchased from my sister in law for the princely sum of $1,000. I have owned a 2001 Porsche Boxster S for the last year, and initially bought the MR2 just for a cheap car for my daughters to drive. However, especially since my eldest went back to school, I have just fallen in love with the little thing. Since I work at a University, with constant fender bender issues in the parking lots, and drive a lot in my job, the MR2 is the perfect commuter vehicle. Now I drive it all week long, and drive (and autocross) the Boxster on weekends.
A few observations: While an early MR2 with dull paint and cheap tires is not going to challenge a 165MPH Porsche in looks or performance, it is at least as much fun to drive, especially in urban traffic. The twincam motor is superb. 30MPG on regular is better than 19 MPG on premium. The MR2 shifts better than the Porsche, and the controls are generally much lighter, though less precise. (Nothing steers like a Porsche). The wheels are very light, but really ugly! So, my cheap beater car has turned out to be too good to keep as a beater. Despite my efforts to avoid it, I have started to turn it into a true project car. I'll keep everyone posted. Mike |
