AT to manual + turbo swap will be more $$4 for sure as there is much more parts and labor required..... won't be too much extra though

gen3's dont pass smog. keep that in mind. its an absolutely illegal swap in all areas of california. the total lack of EGR is a pretty big give away. they'll scan your vin in, it'll come up as a 5SFE powered car, and they'll fail you before even driving onto the rollers.

go gen2 if you live in california, and have CRW drill it out for the EGR and proper smog stuff to legally pass the bar inspection

agreed..... most smog shops can modify the screen for the engine in the car... from the VIN the default will be 5sfe for a NA car or MT for a manual trans car but it can be switched as long as whatever is in the car matches the options the machine gives..... they don't have a option for a v-6 but you have to have a state referee inspect it and give it a clean bill of health before it's legal to operate it on the highways in CA.

that being said... some smog guys are in such a hurry that they overlook the fact that the gen3 doesn't have a EGR... they figure it's under the intakemanifold, hard to get to so go through with the other visuals and then the tailpipe test. can oftentimes get away with passing at a smog shop but if it ever has to go to the state referee you're totally screwed... with a gen2 you're AOK

yup, gen3 means you have to rely on hoping you get a bad smog tech and never being pulled over.. imo thats a pretty rough way to go through car ownership!

no tech will notice a ct20b on a gen2 either

correct -- for the gen2 3sgte only. i cannot make the gen3 legal at all even if i tried. would never pass the ref with 2 EGR systems, 10 cats, etc.

the reason there is an extra fee to make it legal is that the JDM don't come with EGR so i have to source the entire EGR set up, modify the cylinder head for EGR port (requires removing alot of parts), modify the intake manifold for the EGR ports (requires removal)...... you know.. the fun, easy stuff =D

still the lower mileage JDM engines unless a USDM is specified (which are harder to get ahold of)

Gen 3 MR2 Turbo Swap

How will I know a Gen 3 from a Gen 2 3SGTE? And also how will I know if the transmission is LSD?

If I get a Gen 3 what shall I look to replace before having it installed? Please tell me if I missed anything.

Clutch Assembly
Front and Rear Main Seals
Cam Seals
Hose From Hell
Timing Belt
Water Pump
Do I need a tensioner assembly or just a new spring?
New Spark Plugs

New guy here. I've been considering this swap as well. Just curious - how
much are you talking about "out the door" with the above items taken care
of?
