I found a solution to the problem. After much time spent searching the internet I found a winamp type plug in that decompresses APE files into MP3's. Monkey's Audio - a fast and powerful lossless audio compressor very much a life saver.

That's quite strange. What bitrate were they at after you decompressed them? I haven't seen that format for MP3 files yet.

Well according to winamp the KBPS are 1411. The tracks themselves are like 43 megs for a 4 min song though. I don't think I like APE files very much. The entire album, titled Ayumi Hamasaki - Cyber Trance Presents Ayu Trance, is about 571 megs which is rather large.

Sounds liek some shotty loseless format, or some format that is used in editing or sumthing...lemme google it:

Looks like it's just another loseless audio codec, which from the sounds of things is inferior to FLAC.

There really is nothing special about it. Just a pain in the ass when you download them and need to compress them.

That was my guess. Good to see I was right. 571 meg for a single album is insane. Not to talk about my other topic in here already, but that album would have been on Oink in a much better format
