Audio to MP3?

Anyone know if there is a Windows based program where I can hook up a audio device to the audio-in or microphone jack on my computer, and record it on the computer and save it as a MP3?

I use a sound editing application that comes with my Nero deluxe package. Works great and has lots of basic wave editing tools.

I tried to install Goldwave, but it keeps telling me that my sound driver is corrupt? I don't think I can do anything about it anyway - I have a 8 year old computer running Windows ME

Recording from Analog Sources

I haven't tried it as I don't use Real Player, but I know Real Player is free to download, so it may be another option for you.

Are you trying to get music from a records or cassettes onto your computer? My father has a turntable connected to his computer and he records songs from records to his computer, and then he burns them to CDs. If needed I can see how he has his set up and what programs he uses for it.

Just record it using Windows Sound Recorder... Copy and paste like a minute or 40 seconds of blank recording about 500 times and it'll record for as long as you like. Scroll back to the begining and record over it, at the end go to the edit toolbar and tell it to crop everything after the marker, save as a WAV file in any compression you want and then convert to an MP3 via about 100,000 different ways using either the internet, email, or enduser software.

I'd suggest getting an up-to-date sound driver, and if you already have one try to take a step back from that. Sometimes the most recent drivers have issues.

If you wanna post an SS of the message I could look into it for you.

Did you REALLY just recommend Real Player? Holy **** dude, that's enough to get banned from u-moc lol. At the next meet i'm slapping you for that comment.

Cool Edit Pro 2 is cake as **** to use, it really is. You record and it pops up the file in a timeline, real easy to take out parts, cuz out static/no noise parts, etc. It's CAKE! Go download it, give it 30min, and you'll havei t all figured out. Just go do it and thank the gods you haven't installed Real Player on your computer essentially turning it into a broken computer.

So I ended up having to download DirectX 10 (a requirement for Goldwave) and it still says my sound driver is bad. Where can I get a sound driver for Windows ME ?

As was said, use Audicity.

Audacity: Free Audio Editor and Recorder

Here is a link to the features page

Audacity: Features

If you need a program to encode...use Mediacoder. Like Audicity, it's free. This program can encode anything to anything. It's options are endless. Audio or Video, it's the only encoding program you need.

MediaCoder - more than a universal audio/video transcoder
