Why is my computer running slow?

Everything I do is slow, at first I thought it was my internet connection but then my work laptop connected and works just fine. I have Anit-Spywayre software and anti-virus too. Ive cleaned out my cache and cookies but no help.

What else can I do? its especially slow when I have more than one IE window open at a time.

I am not a computer guru by any means, so please dumb it down for me.

should take a while if you have alot of garbage. if that dosent help... sorry tried my best.

How long since you have reinstalled windows? Sounds drastic but if you have been running windows for a few years it gets overloaded with old dll files and such that no amount of cleaning up fixes. Also look up a program named hijack this!. Rename the exe (to whatever you want), if you get it and do a scan although it can root your pc if your not careful it is a powerful tool that can pick up somethings anti virus wont

I know this is old but

There one of your problem, your using IE IMO Firefox is better.

If the disk clean up doesn't help, you might need to format your computer, and and reinstall your OS, and only install things you need.

Maybe you should just stick to a typewriter? j/k your hard disk might be going bad, listen for clicking noises coming from it. How much memory do you have, that might be affecting its performance. Defrag the disk and run check disk (google to find out how) that might help.

Of course it might just be getting old.

Forgot to mention any AntiVirus/Firewall software will slow it down, Stay away from Norton 360(or any version of norton) Norton crushes the performance of even fast computers.

First of all, Norton and McAfee really slow down the performance of a PC. They've added a bunch of "feature" that you don't need, which hogs your system resources.

Second, DO NOT delete everything that HiJack This come back with. You have to be careful using HiJack This.

Third, Uninstall your anti virus and spyware program and buy Trend Mirco Antivuris Plus Antispyware. It doesn't have a firewall, intrusion protection, child locks, etc. All those extra features will slow down most computers to a halt. Also, download Super AntiSpyware, it's free and catches a lot of junk that others do not catch.

Perform a disk cleanup. Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Disk Cleanup.

IE has nothing to do with your performance issues most likely and installing FireFox will only add more to your PC.

I didn't see that you responded with the PC specs, but RAM is so cheap. You can get 2GB for under $100. So load up on that.

This advice sounds more like it ^. A few of the above comments about a system getting 'old' are simply not true. My 'Internet' computer runs 9 year old hardware with turn of the century Windows server software and it boots to the desktop in just a tad over 35 seconds - and that's with a 'slow as molasses' puny 40GB IDE hard drive.

Over time, people collect software like iPod gear, printer/scanner programs, etc., installing more than their system can handle. This is similar to those heavy car parts or tools or that sports bag in your frunk or trunk that keep accumulating to add to its overall weight eventually eroding acceleration. Most programs these days throw something into the HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run section of the Windows registry. This is just one of the keys that instructs Windows to run that program at startup where it stays in memory & kills your performance. If a system has more than 4 or 5 entries in this key, then it's probably running too many unnecessary programs for its own good, having tons of RAM won't help because these programs will just use more of what's available. My Internet computer also has just 10 'services' running, less than a quarter of what most people run - that means that it not only boots up quick, it runs quick too (just don't ask me to do any heavy file transfers on my main drive).

And Firefox is a good overall browser but it's dog slow, fastest browser by far is Opera - but that thing is more spyware than browser.
