deleting Windows XP
My buddy has a not so good copy of Windows XP and I gave him a legit copy of windows XP.
How do we delete the old windows xp and install the new one? We put the CD in, but it says that the one he has now is newer than the one we want to install. Details and how to's are helpful as we are not computer geniuses. |

Thats probably because the current one he has have SP2 or maybe even SP3 installed and usually the one on the cd is a "base copy".... if you guys are absolutely sure you want to delete the old system, I suggest you backup everything to an external drive (pictures, documents etc...) then insert the good copy of XP you said you gave him, reboot the machine and let it boot on the "CD/DVD ROM"
Follow the instructions from there.. |

^+1 it'll tell ask you to pless any key to boot from cd. (make sure u put the cd in the computer and then restart it.)
press anykey and follow directions. no not repair! click anything else but dont click repair. when u get to a part where u see ur hardrive delete it click "create partion" and once your done with that continue the directions and it'll come to a format screen. click the regular format not the "quick format" and thats it.. it'll format the hardrive, copy all files, install the xp and then ask you a few questions when its done so you can set the computer based on you. it all might sounds crazy now just write it down or print it and do it while on the paper if not pm me i'll give you my number to call me. hope i helped! |

I've done it a million times, hopefully this helps.
Detailed instructions: 1. Insert CD. 2. If not done already, go into the BIOS (usually by press DEL on the keyboard) in the Advanced options it has something along the lines of "Boot Order." Set the CD-ROM/DVD Drive as the 1st one and reboot. 3. You will see a dos prompt that say, "Press any key to boot from CD," press any key. 4. Allow setup to load. 5. Once set up loads it will ask you to press enter to continue installing Windows. 6. Press F8 and agree to the policy. 7. It will detect the old OS and show you a partition C: (or any other random letter). It's a good idea to delete this partition, press "D." 8. Windows being made by Microsoft will ask if you are sure, press "L," to confirm. 9. It should bring you back to the partition screen, press enter to continue. 10. Now you're asked how you'd like to format the drive. Personally I'd go with Format NTFS. You can choose quick if you're in a time crunch. The difference is quick cleans the drive tables, but doesn't erase the drive. The other option actually erases the drive and checks for any errors on it. 11. The rest is pretty much just wait until prompted and click the next button a lot. Fast instructions: 1. Boot from CD. 2. Delete the primary partition. 3. Install Windows. |

Yeah, just boot from the CD, and delete the partition, create a new one, quickformat it, and install windows to the new partition.
It really is that easy. |

Darik's Boot And Nuke | Hard Drive Disk Wipe
That program completely wipes your harddrive clean. Normally when you delete for format something, you just get rid of the indexes, but the info is still there. That program rewrites over the old data with garbage data so nothing is recoverable. |

As good as nuking a drive is I don't think there is any child porn that needs hiding so a regular format will be fine and nuking takes a while cause it has to write over everything with random data lines. Plus when you don't have stellar computer skill simple is best. Unless the fbi is closing in then it would be best to quickly hide that data.

I might have a key for pro service pack 2. I'm guessing it is Pro service pack 2? not 1 or 3
