Slight Problem.

My wife's cousin's desktop, it was orginially loaded with XP, but he decided he wanted to download vista ultimate off limewire, and now microsoft has locked him out and it will only let him access Internet Explorer so he can buy a legit copy of vista.

Any to get around this and/or fix it? We managed to make it to system restore but it didn't help. Still has the same problem.

Does he want vista or to go back to XP? Vista since he didn't buy it I can only suggest he buys business edition or something if he wants that. But if he wants XP back and it was legit I may have a spare license because when I signed up for uni computer studies they gave me an XP pro license as part of the course so I could use their software. That is if I can still find it, I may have lost it.

I would support cracking XP if he has to but not vista since he didn't own it. I pirated vista but it hogged too much resources so formatted and have never used it since, if I did move to it I probably would have brought it legit. I'm an honest pirate as strange as that is.

Just go back to XP
Ultimately if your computer didnt come with Vista it wont be able to run Vista fast enough to be pleasurable.

That's the truth, Ultimate is the worst of the bunch. I heard Windows 7 is the cat's meow so I downloaded the Beta and so far I'm not impressed.

Well there's the trick isn't it? If the sticker on the laptop is an XP sticker he has the license for XP (pro or home depending on what the sticker has on it). He should be able to reinstall XP on there without too much trouble. I would dogpile (not google) for a Vista ultimate key generator (you might need to know if its a retail version, NFR, or OEM copy of Vista, also if its SP1 or not. I know of a few quality XP key generators but since I'm in IT and we deal mostly with Dells I have all the CD's/DVD's for it. I need to ask you why in the world would you want to install Vista? when they came out with SP1 it made Vista even worse then it was before. Also if you reinstall XP make sure you have backed up all your data you want to keep and have access to device drivers and programs that he installed (office, any games, adobe photoshop, ect...) You could go and download the Windows 7 beta from MS and install it over Vista, that will give you a bit of time to still use the computer and find what you need then do what you want.

I'm not sure why he would willingly want vista. I hate Vista. Do any of you know how he can get XP reinstalled on the computer without the disc?

Sure. you can do it over the network. You need to have a server on the network that stores the image files. there are also other ways also, this link might help you out

Install XP over a network

Free Vista w00t.

**Disclaimer, I'm not a cheapass. It's my wife's Cousin's computer, I do not promote downloading anything illegal over the interwebs.**

Vista should be free. Paying for it is a crime. I hated every minute I used it, it would warn about everything it was sort of like "OMFG! you turned your computer, NO don't turn it off that could hurt your system somehow, also DON'T CLICK ON ANYTHING windows defender has detected everything as harmful." Urghh it was horrible and ate about about 700mb memory just idling without antivirus.

XP is better and windows 7 better be streamlined and not retarded, sadly I think it will gay be no matter what they say.

I have 4gb and 64bit vista business through uni and after turning off all those insane "are you sure you want to do this" messages, which is extremly simple ive had a more positive experience than with my xp

I still don't like it. I turned that all off as well but it still hogged memory and with all the advanced transparency on the desktop I noticed a noticeable slowdown in games. I upgraded GPU later but still hogs all your resources. I have better things to do than waste time trying to find new tweaks and hacks for vista. Windows 7 I'm waiting to see what that turns out like, vista was/is a disaster. Also a lot of my apps won't work in vista like ati-tool and stuff, they just give problems.

I vista on the comp at my mom's house. That is true. Whenever I start a game, Windows asks for my permission to run it, then the beggining loads, then vista asks again, then it asks a third and final time. It's so annoying!!! I ****ing hate vista!!!!!
