USB Device Not Recognized
I have brand new HP laptop (out of the box for about 2 months) and I hardly use it for anything other than the internet. All I have on it really is iTunes (not 1 game installed).
It has 2 USB ports. All I had in one was a wireless mouse and the other port was only used when I connected my iPod. 2 days ago I connected my iPod and then a pop up message saying "USB Device Not Recognized" popped up. And now NONE of my USB ports work. There is nothing in the ports right now and that message won't stop popping up (pops up every 5 seconds). I am running Windows Vista and I checked for updates on the Windows Update site and nothing. I also went to the device manager and it says that all my USB ports are working fine? Anyone have any tips? |

Go to Disk Management then change the drive letter... it probably assigned a drive letter that is already in use.
Right click "Computer" Select Manage You'll see Computer Management window under "Storage" Select Disk Management check wish drive your USB is assigned to (removeable device) right click change drive letter and select a free drive letter that is not in use then OK OK OK FINISH or whatever... Hope that helps. |

Under disk management, all I see is C: and D: nothing happens if I double click them and I don't see USB anywhere.

You do not see removeable disk?
I'm assuming your C: is your OS drive... Your D: could be your CD/DVD ROM.... Nothing else on there? See attached.... Let me know if that works or not... If it still does not show up. Try inserting your thumb drive to another USB port. If that does not work, another thing to try is to remove under Device manager. Uninstall the thumb drive, remove it, then insert it back it hoping it installs fresh drivers. |

I was able to fix the problem. I took the battery out of the computer and everything works fine now.
How do I take a screen shot so I can show you my Device Manager list? |

Print screen button then paste it on MS Paint and save as jpg.... Print screen button is usually next to SCROLL LOCK, PAUSE/BREAK button up on the upper right corner

Yeah, it was weird because it all happened when I plugged the iPod in. The iPod itself has a bad backlight, sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't.....

3rd Gen 8GB Nano. I just use it in my car - my head unit controls the iPod so it sits in the glove box so I don't really care that the backlight is screwy.

Let me just say that USB drive recognition in Windows Vista is HORRIBLE. I have an awesome 8 gb flash drive that Vista won't work with at all. Its USB device detection is totally flawed.
On my flash drive Vista will detect it, give it a correct drive letter, then when I try to copy anything to it, Vista will say it can't find what I am trying to copy. Can't wait til Windows 7. |
