Probably cheap drive and might have been a special sale, but still, for just storing pictures you don't need speed.
newegg always has the best deals usually.

They have a Samsung and a Hitachi 1TB 7200rpm for 79 with free shipping.

In hindsight I intended my homebuilt computer to be installed with Windows Vista. Microsoft DID throw a Windows ME at us, but it had a few redeeming features. More drivers and less hiccuping than XP. My rig was in that predicament, even though I prefered XP on it.

XP felt jimmy rigged compared to Windows 98. The stock Luna interface is disgusting. Windows Vista had a nicer interface in some ways, in others it sucked. Windows 7 is doing what Vista should have been, and what XP was meant to be.

My gaming rig is finally complete with Windows 7 x64. There's a Virtual Windows XP for backwards compatibility. Some of my programs and drivers don't work with 64 bit. I installed a secondary partition with Windows 7 x32. For anything that hiccups, I have Windows XP on an IDE drive.

Outside of needing to unhook my printer and external drive before bootup (they should be anyway, less power consumption), I've not noticed any problems.
