Windows 7

Anyone download it from microsoft? They made the 7100 build available to the public on the 5th I think.

If I had to do it again I wouldn't waste my time downloading it and burning it onto a CD. To me, it seems like Vista with a different suit on. It steal eats your HDD space. I partitioned away 50gb from one of my hdd's and it's down to 30. It looks better than Vista, and does boot a bit faster. Didn't check out many other things. Maybe later.

Got ultimate on USB stick and looking at installing on a VM. Any thoughts on this? Worthwhile, crap, to slow on a VM.........etc. etc.

I have a 500gb and a 160gig, I'd like it much more if it was 10-15ish gig, I know that's asking for a lot.

I'd advise anyone going for 7 when it comes out to shoot for 500gb or more.
Or do a tb and dual boot with xp. I use my computer for storying gig's of pictures and game's I've already burnt through 1/4 of my 500gig So, I threw 7 on the 160 gig with xp along side it.

Just installed W7 on a VM and had a look. i was never a fan of vista and didn't install it so w7 is a completely (yeah right) new world for me. I ,must admit I quite like the look but I'm missing 3d windows, floating taskbars and a whole bunch of **** that would make the experience new and not just a smoother version of XP.

I've been running the beta on my work laptop (latitude d430, 1.2 dual core ULV with 2gb ram and a 40gb 1.8" hdd) on a 20gb partition since it came out.

After taking a week to arrange it the way I like it (couldnt stand the new start bar) I find that overall its not bad. Memory usage seems "fine" with 2 gigs, and its just as fast as xp pro was/is (dual boot with the 2x20gb partitions, but I havn't booted into xp since I put this on months back...)
It does eat a bit of hard drive space, but what doesnt these days? I've got my full system with all my apps and even a bunch of my photos that havn't made it off the laptop yet all inside the 20gb partition without much trouble.
...
It's more stable than xp before you start installing apps. I ran it entirely without an antivirus for the first few months, never had to reboot. Note that I throw this thing in and out of standby 20+ times a day at work, so XP would need a reboot every few weeks because it would just get all lagged up. This seems fine- although I installed an AV the other day and wound up crashing my machine- stupid av isn't even vista ready yet...

So right now I'm prepping my other laptop (mini-9 with a 64gb ssd and 2gb ram) for my upcoming roadtrip, installing GPS software and whatnot.

Overall, I give the beta an A+. Judging it as a complete OS, it'd get closer to a C-, as it definately has some bugs. I'll be snagging a copy of the RC that just came out and installing it on here when I get back from vacation, I think.

I can't get use to this new taskbar. It's cool and saves a TON of space but it takes a lot of getting use to. I love how it doesn't ask you for your permission 80 times before something installs like Vista does. +1

Windows 7 uses 723mb of my memory at idle opposed to 1.32gb with vista. Think I might end up "buying" it when it's released.

I am optimistic about windows 7, I think it is 10097890234x better than vista. Vista was a programming failure. I will probably go to 4gb memory when I get w7 and get a 500gb hdd rather than the 250gb I have now. Then customise w7 to how I want and then just wait for the hacks and useful apps to appear.

I'm liking windows 7 more and more. Slide show background is a neat feature. A least for me. Even the windows sidebar is better. It's starting to look like a legit os instead of a BS revision of a craptastic OS.

I wound up changing the task bar to function like the xp one (at least as much as it let me)

Runs pretty well on these lightweight netbook laptops.

I saw terabyte drives on Tiger Direct the other day, less than $80.
Probably cheap drive and might have been a special sale, but still, for just storing pictures you don't need speed.
