Ack!! Did my video card explode?
I was playing Eve Online a few minutes ago, when all of a sudden, the computer showed the screen "scrambled", and locked up. I restarted, and the computer will get back to the login screen, but if I log on, the monitor slowly flashes on and off, and the computer shows some of the scrambled images, and essentially freezes. It runs in safe mode, but the screen has lines going up and down all over the screen.
What do you think? Destroyed video card? Corrupted file? What can I check? |

Try new card drivers first and see if that helps it may be a bad driver file. The gpu may have fried, I had it happen to an old Geforce 2 once.
Also check it hasn't been magically overclocked somehow just use gpu-z or something to check the clocks against stock idk if you have overclocking software or not. Also helps if you have another computer you can try the card in as well sometimes. |

Video card drivers have been reinstalled, and have resulted in the blue screen of death followed by an auto-restart.
I don't touch the clock speed, so I doubt that's related. |

it could have just over heated, what kinda card is it? with cards priced as they are it wouldn't be expensive to replace!

Some cards are more prone to others for dying so yeah what model card is it? I know some of the older x19xx cards got friggin hot and if the fans were not cleaned out sometimes they would get hot enough to do damage and start artifacting.
Got another system to try it in or alternatively a card you can borrow for your system? It could still be software related Cards are cheap as well |

Do you have any video card recommendations?
I was looking at the Nvidia Geforce 260 GTX, but I was wondering if there's a point to getting a high end card that uses PCI Express 2.0 when I believe my computer only has PCI Express 1.0. Thoughts? |

She's toast, the scrambled video is caused by either fried ram (causes artifacts) or a toasted RAMDAC controller, which causes all sorts of fun.
I got nothing for recommendations, though. |

i am an ati guy so i dun know to much about nvidia or how hard core of a gamer you are. a good nvidia card for the money seems to be this:
Newegg.com - EVGA 512-P3-N871-AR GeForce 9800 GTX+ 512MB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Supported Video Card - Desktop Graphics / Video Cards that card should be able to handle quite a bit and really it isn't that expensive. maybe you should find one that is designed to be cooled with a passive cooler haha gl man |

![]() THE- OVEN TRICK - WORKED - Overclockers Forums The oven trick- I put the video card in the oven at 385 degrees for 10 minutes, took it out, let it cool, reinstalled it, and everything works great. I can't believe that actually worked. ![]() |

385? what did it do, resolder the connections or something?
I've never heard of the oven trick. Havn't frequented the OCforums since highschool ![]() spiffy, though. I'll have to try it someday... Somewhere I've got an overheated 6800 that I had taken the fan off of and forgot about it, threw it in a pc for a post-test and then let it idle for an hour or so. |

The theory I read is the solder develops microfractures over time, because it expands and contracts at a different rate from the rest of the board, and that causes the electrical flow to be interrupted or restricted, leading to failure. Heating it up to 385-400 melts the solder, allowing it to harden like new.

Just like re-seating the memory when it gets errors, only for solder joints.
That's nifty. You're on borrowed time with that card, start saving ![]() |
