I'm having some ridiculous virus issues that AVG, Trend Micro, etc cannot seem to solve, so I may have to reinstall windows. I have Vista right now, which has been mediocre- some parts I like better than XP, but mostly I think XP is better. I've also been looking at Windows 7, but I know very little about it, besides that it's supposed to have some minor performance enhancements. Is Windows 7 supposed to be hard to crack? XP was fine, Vista was annoying as hell there.
What do you think would be the best choice? Computer stats: Intel Core2Duo 6700 2.66GHz (x2) 2 gigs ram 256mb nVidia GeForce 7600GS video card |

Well, I don't know about cracking 7 yet, but I was running the beta since it came out, and I've been running RC since that came out...
I ran vista for all of a week when It came out. Worst. Right now, I'd say XP. Don't get me wrong, I like 7- it runs smoothly, looks good (not that I care), is customizable, and is stable- (In and out of standby 20+ times a day for work, 7 can go a few months without a reboot- XP would quit within 20 days)... BUT, there are indications, to me, of some serious problems with the networking stack in the RC that weren't in the beta. There isn't any indication of any change in the stack according to MS, but for all I know they put in some snoopware or something, and it's causing trouble. Or it could just be my install is a little corrupt, who knows. I vote stick with xp until a few months after vista is off the shelves, by then sp1 will be coming out, fixing the bugs... overall, 7 is decent, and presuming they get the domain stuff correct with it, it WILL replace xp, possibly in droves. (imagine lemmings...) |

Windows 7 is win. I'm running the 7100 build, and don't plan on buying it when it's released unless I build a computer. If by crack you mean to torrent it. I dunno, As I said, I'm using the build from microsoft.com with the stop timer hack. As far as I can tell the build I'm using is very close to the final version. I've had 0 problems with it since I put it on my spare hdd. In and out of stand by numerous times a day. No boot problems or slowness. Vista is a plague, It doesn't even go into standby for some weird reason. I personally like 7 the best between the three. Vista being dead last. |

I may have to try Windows 7 then. 1TB harddrives are down to around $60 shipped right now, which is freaking amazing, so I may have to pick one up and load Windows 7 on it.

I have a 300 gig and a 700 gig right now, along with another 500 and 700 that don't work. I've been out of space forever, and had I the room, I'd probably be using 8-10 terabytes by now, if I was being conservative.

I feel the same way, my "server" has 1tb of usable space, and I'm worried that my photos alone are going to fill it soon.
Should you find yourself getting serious about storage, have a look at This; I just ordered one friday for a client... looks like I got the last one from newegg, but it's a spiffy little box. Ran us $850, and with 8x2tb drives ($1680, yikes! over 2500 for the rig) we could have 14tb hanging out, with hardware raid5. |

If I had money coming out my ass, you better believe I'd be doing just that. However, $5 is a major expense right now, considering I haven't been able to find a job in the past 10 months of intensive searching.

Before you do that, have you tried popping that hard drive out and slaving it as a D:\ or E:\ drive on another system, then doing a virus scan from there? Some of these pesky viruses are too embedded in the core Windows files to be removed, but they are easy to excise when the O/S isn't active.

With the crap I've been seeing lately, that's not the case. I do viral removals from a PE environment, and even then I've got a few that I cant seem to clean.

For now I am sticking with XP, however I have 7 installed on a few test beds... it works well. Once it is released and I decide to build a better rig (running old p4 3.0 atm) i will upgrade till then I see no need xp works fine for what I use it for.

I personally like Vista. I hated it when I first started using it but it grew on me. It seems to be a fair bit more stable than XP Pro, though Pro wasn't bad by any means either.
You really have to rip into Vista though and modify a lot so you don't get all the msgs and such. At this point my Vista OSs all run like XP except smoother overall. I have a buddy at MS so I will probably get him to send me a copy of 7 sometime soon, but I have no experience with it yet!
