You could take a modern Toyota 5 or 6-speed A/T and bolt it to a 3SGTE... The cars they come from have "sport shift" modes with the usual +/- slap-shifting. Find a knowledgable transmission shop to make or install a shift kit on there and you should have a quick (albeit rough) 5 or 6 speed gearbox that will be about as good as it gets, short of a true sequential manual..

The Celica 6-speed has been adapted to work on a 5VZFE, which can be bolted to an E-series tranny.. which means that however Node did that, you can adapt an MR2 Spyder 5 or 6-speed SMT..

I did that too and everything was fine. But like 3-4 weeks later my transmission crapped out but not sure if it was related to that or not.

maybe you can use a Audrino microcontroller (or some other high end microcontroller) and 2 stepper motors or actuators to control the shift cables.... idk.

I doubt thats what caused the trans to crap out. If anything, that doesnt do as much damange to the trans, it puts all the shock on the motor.

Only thing I can think of is that since we have non-interference motors, even if your valve floated a bit (stayed open), your piston wouldnt reach up high enough to smack it and blow up. There are a ton of other motors that are interference motors that have done that and had piston to valve contact.

Or... maybe you just reacted quick enough.

ahh man i do that at least twice a week. its cool. no but ive done it before an its kinda crazy.
my friend let this kid drive his s2000 last summer because he was to drunk. the kid driving wanted to run this mustang on the way home so my boy was like go ahead. he hit 2nd to 3rd an then went to pull 4th after redline but slammed it back into 2nd just like everyone does, except he didnt catch it he floored it again an the computer said the motor revd to like 14k. anyway it was shot an the kid driving left him with a big ass bill at honda.

I accidentally did something similar to my friend's Honda Civic. I mis-shifted and hit 2nd instead of 4th, and it revved up to like 9500rpm. Luckily, the only damage was due to the engine torquing so much that it hit the hood and cut into one of the spark plug wires(which is rather disturbing in itself). Replaced that wire and all was well.

i was doing track with my GTI (god rest her) and did the same thing it revved the S outta the motor and then cut out . and completly shut off. but i restarted and drove into staging and pulled the negative cable and let her sit then pluged it back in and all was well .. gotta love the inline V six (VR6)
side note
the moter was cammed and chipped and the revved limiter was set higher and i had engine managment and stage 4 clutch.. that could have been why it didnt break.....

I recently shifted into 3rd instead of 5th because I was distracted by a phone call. First time I've ever done such a thing, but man I was mad at myself.

The weird thing is that it never over-reved; it just lost spark. I assumed it was a safety mechanism from the ECU - but no one here seems to have the same experience.

I just shifted back into 4th and all was well. I guess I got lucky.

Anyone have any info on the ignition cut I experienced?

2 me going from 3rd to 4th is the easiest shift because u just pull it straight back, but its different when your racing cuz u got so much other things to worry about.

Occasionally when i'm daily driving and distracted I'll go from 3 to 4 back to 3 instead of 5, nothing really happens because im not gunning it
