I'm officially beginning my quest for 10's

Yup. I've officially set a goal for myself to get the mr2 into the 10's. However, there is a kicker, my track is at 5800+ ft elevation. Shuold be fun!

Setup I will have (things may and probably will change):

Forged Motor
Ported Heads w/oversized valves
Borg Warner S256 machined for stock manifold.
38mm internal gate routed to downpipe w/~16psi spring
Stock Cams
Possibly intake manifold if I feel good enough spending the money
KO Racing intercooler w/Synchronic BOV
Intercooler cooling fan and dual engine bay cooling fans
Walbro 255 in tank fuel pump
Steel braided fuel lines (eventually will get teflon coating for e85 longevity)
Wolfkatz side feed fuel rail
Sard 800 Low impedence injectors
AEM ecu
AEM wideband
GM boost solenoid
No AFM
NX wet nitrous kit w/safety stuff
3" exhaust (berk catback)
Stage 3 clutch (PO purchase, don't know brand)
tough motor mounts
Lightweight flywheel

Plan to a ~50 shot of nitrous (need to install nitrous through aem but still on a switch). Will rev up to roughly 8k rpms. Want to hit the half century mark power wise (intake mani may be mandatory for this).

That should do it i believe. Nothing else of true importance that I can think of.

-Mike

Good luck man. Just understand and remember the huge mound of money you burn to the MR2 gods is worth it. You did an LS1 swap on a RX7 so I'm sure you understand. My buddy has crazy money sunk in his.

Thanks! The mr2 world is definitely still new to me. I've had plenty of fast cars and turbo cars, but the mr2 has its differences for sure.

Great

Another V8 RX-7 convert!

I knew I recognized that name from somewhere. I sold my LS6 powered FD (Cam, tune, 150 shot) to a guy from Prague, Czech Republic. Bought this MR2 for $700.00 to build into a racecar. Long story short I have $15k in it now and I did all the work myself. Of course this is a road race car so I have lots of money in weird things that help you turn and slow down as opposed to go faster.

Things I would recommend:
1) Lighten the car to the max. Mine is SERIOUSLY gutted and I'm down to 2250 lbs without me in it.
2) REALLY get the motor solidly mounted to the car. The front motor mount on my car had issues even just road racing. That sucker needs to be SOLID.
3) with 2300 lbs car dyno'd 240 rwhp and ran 12.1 @ 110. I am going back since I now have 266 rwhp and 275 wtq.
4) Again, reducing weight is a much easier way to go fast than adding power.
5) Get the Chromoly CV Shafts cages now.

I'm thinking my car is easily good for 11's right now (Gen3 motor and stock CT20B) and the only thing I would need for 10's is something like a 20g (50-60 more rwhp). There are probably 100 more lbs left to go in this car as well.

My .02 on building a drag car. These things hook like HELL with decent tires and light weight. Good luck!

Yeah i had an lsx fd and fc. Loved them both! Just going for something different now.

What would you recommend for light weight? I'm keeping it a solid daily driveable (though not daily driver) car. I don't want to gut it at all but will take off unseen/unused parts in a heartbeat.

Noted on the motor mounts, i'll have to look into ordering those.

Anything else bad on the drivetrain other than the cv?

I'm going for around 500rwhp so we'll see i suppose

Search for my posts

I have a near-complete list of everything I have pulled off of my car. The big things are noted and you cna pick what you think you want.

Exhaust, for example, is 78 lbs complete. If the new exhaust is kept simple, that's an easy 50-55 lbs right there. Seats are very heavy as well. Lots of strange heavy stuff in the car like the mirrors and stuff like that.

Like I said, review the list and pick what you can live with. When I hear 10 second street car I tend to recommend something like "get a 2nd gen RX-7 and put an LS1 and a 100 shot of nitrous on it". But it's do-able in an MR2.

Drivetrain is VERY stout in these cars aside from CV shafts and motor mount points. Google "Mr2 Wheelie" to see what I'm talking about

haha yeah i've seen the m2 wheelie. Car looks like a toy because the front wheels have no suspension travel lol. Just wasn't sure if a car like that had an upgraded driveline of sorts.

I've got a berk exhaust, not the simplest, but the best looking and sounding in my opinion. With all the work done to it, i'd like to weigh it to see the weight difference. My drivers seat is torn up and i'm wanting to get new seats, maybe i'll just get some lightweight ones instead of the stockers like i had planned.

I don't think 10's really is that hard of a goal really. It's a lightweight car with a strong engine and can launch pretty darn well. We'll see though!

What size tire can i squeeze in the back on a 15" rim? I can get some 15" mustang fitment rims for free so I may put some dr's on them unless i can find something lighter before hand.

I think 275/50/15's should fit with the correct offset and rolled fenders.

I run 255 16's on the back and they are pretty tall - you should have no problems.

Your car should be REALLY fast.

It might. a 255/60/15 is 27" tall. Might have to go with a 50 or 55. You know who would know for sure? EL PALO on here is the wheel tire god

one maybe obvious thing that hasn't been mentioned yet - I'm sure the stock clutch won't take that kind of abuse! You're prolly gonna have to go multi-disc to cope with 500whp

i've got an upgraded clutch good for a claimed 500ftlb of torque so i should be ok for that, we'll see how it responds to two-step launches though.

I ended up find an EXTREMELY good deal on some mustang wheels with 27" tall 255 drag radials. I mean a GREAT deal....$35 for the pair including tires! I am picking them up today and we'll see if they fit. If not, i'll just turn around and sell em for $50 lol.

I believe I'm going to go with a larger fuel system and run e85. We'll see how far that gets me. After that, the stock intake manifold and cams will have to go and that will easily put me where i need to be.
