MSD BTM 5462/8910eis install help

I am installing the above on my 91 5sfe. I have every thing ran and mounted, but the wiring I am not positive about. The control knob is hooked up properly. The 8910 is plugged into the BTM properly.

That leaves the red and black wires from the 8910 and the red, orange, and white wires from the BTM. If I am not mistaken the white wire is not used.

Now, instructions say that:

BTM wire red=coil positve (which is 12v switched)
BTM wire orange=coil negative
(I think)8910 wire red=BTM wire red
(I think)8910 wire black=original wire going to coil positive

My qustion: is this corret so far and if not what do I connect the 8910 red and black wires to? Also what colors are the wires going to the coil +/-

This should help. It's from a post a few years back on oc:

1) Mount the BTM and tac adapter in the engine bay somewhere so all the wires can reach the coil.
2) Hook the black wire of the BTM to ground somewhere like on the strut tower or firewall.
3) Hook the red wires of both the BTM and Tach adapter to the positive on your coil. You may have to open it up to see which one that is or test for 12 volts when the ignition key is on.
4) Cut the wire that goes from the coil negative to the igniter. The Orange wire from the BTM hooks to the coil side and the white wires from the BTM and Tach adapter hook to the igniter side. (Sometimes this Tach adapter wire is black)

That's all there is to it.

Well, I hooked everything up as in that diagram and now the car wont start.

Any ideas? I am electronicaly retarded and at a loss for ideas.

What if I just run the black wire from the 8910 to the igniter negative and leave out the white wire from the BTM? (I was under the understanding that the white wire is for points type ignition and not used in magnetic pickup)

That should work. It is what I used on mine and what the MSD instructions say to do. Which MSD unit are you using? Worse case if you can't figure it out give MSD a call.

Double check all your connections and make sure you are connecting the right wires to the positive and negative on the coil. You can check it with a multimeter to see which is which with the key turned to the on position but the engine not running.

If it helps the ignitor is sending the trigger signal to the coil to fire. The MSD is just intercepting that signal, delaying it and then sending a retarded signal to fire the coil. The Tach Adapter is probably just a filter so the MSD can read it correctly.

mine is a 5462. I will double check to make sure I have the positive and negative wires right. I spliced/cut the wires from the plug going to the coil, this is the right wires to use right? I also used those plastic clamps with the teeth to splice inline. this is my first time using these and not positive on thier functionality

Solder and shrink tubing would be better but crimps will get you by. I personally worry about the exposed wires corroding over time. Yes those are the right wires and you only have to cut the negative.
