1986 mint with a blown crank
Hey folks,
I live in Conroe, TX and I just bought a mint 86 with a blown crank. I rebuilt an 86 ingine about 10 years ago and made a crucial error. I installed the exhust gasket upside down and the leaking gasses caught fire and the engine burned beyond rebuild. I ended up up giving away the unit. Lesson # 1 obvious Lesson # 2 always carry a fire extingusher on the first few test runs. I am looking forward to doing this again. I will probably do an engine swap. the exact engine and rebuild the one I have with some HP stuff on it like cams. I love the MR2 I have owned neary 25 toyotas since my first corrola in 88. I am open to any suggestions. I want to do the swap without and electrical gymnastics or fabrications. I would love to put a trubo or s/c version but I am leaning twards the NA swap. exact same engine. Who should buy the JDM engine from? ![]() |

Hi Jetdriver,
I sure like my 86, fun to drive and very economical. My brother rebuilt the engine in it about 4 years ago. For the expense it took, I think I would investigate a JDM swap if faced with a rebuild. With the sad C52 transmissions in the early Mk1s, I would think an JDM engine/tranny combo would be the way to go. If you contact toyoandrew (Houston, TX) on this board, perhaps he could share some details of his rebuild of both engine and transmission vs JDM purchase. He expressed no desire to chance a JDM engine. Good luck, John |

how is it that your exhaust gaskets caused the fire when..... the manifold gasket WON'T go on "backwards" (it literally will only fit on 1 way) and the flange gaskets aren't directional.... meaning they can go either direction (same as the cat gaskets too)..... something else caused the fire..... |

I think it was the built up oil on the engine compartment wall. only because I saw it burning. There could have been something else. I knew there was an exhust leak cuz I could hear it. My boss wanted the car outta the hanger so I was gunna drive it home and ......... there may have been a leak that was a contributing factor... Anyway, I will be more careful and carry a fire bottle.
