4AG to GZE or 20V Swap
Hello all! I was wondering, should I pay to have my 1987 MR2 MK1 engine rebuilt and maybe soop it up some?
I would want to also maybe get the tranny redone, a new clutch, and any bolt ons that I could find to go on it. (Cam gears, pulleys, etc…) Any ideas how much this might run? ($$$) Or would I be better off just getting a JDM Engine and tranny off EBAY and just adding bolt ons to it and paying to have it installed? I want to at least double the horses (around 112hp or so currently according to internet).I have another question as well. When I do finally decide to have my swap done, I will not only be looking for performance, but reliability as well. would it be smarter to go with a Supercharged GZE, or a 20V? And how fast will it actually be? What cars will I be able to beat (city and highway)? I think my expectations may be a little to high. Thanks! |

this question is asked very often and i went with the 20v. first off if u r having a mechanic do this swap its going to be difficult to talk one into doing the 20v due to limited parts available, the generic knowledge of the engine of others, and just knowing how to work with it. the gze is probably going to be safer as far as that is concerned b/c ur really not going out on limb to that swap since this engine came in 2s anyway. you'll find alot more information and parts for this engine and that helps if u dont really have any skills as far as engineering ideas out your ass. but if you were "daring enough to go to the extremes" and willing to give up your abililty to just walk into a parts store and say I have this and i need this or going to a mechanic anywhere and having any number of services done then the 20v is worth it i love my car and I can say its pretty dependable, well as dependable as a engine swap in a 20+ year old car can be, if you go with the 20v I recommend that you speak to mr220v about a harness. with either choice you'll have to get the ecu for the engine and wiring, both will bolt in easily and you dont have to do any fabrication for either, you can use your same tranny and really no one will be able tell that you've done a swap by looking ,unless of course they know what engine should be in there, even if you want to still have some boost later on in the 20v then there are a number of ppl using turbos
as far as power right off the bat 16v n/a 112 16v sc 145 20vsilvertop 160 20vblacktop 165/170 and of course add minor tuning to all to get an extra 5 or so Last edited by mr2silvertop; 04-10-2007 at 04:29 PM. |

Hello all!
I am seriously thinking about putting some MR2 Spyder Rims on my ’87. Should I go with the 15 or 16 inch rims? Any thoughts? Thanks! |

I was wondering if anyone out here can give me an estimate of how much horsepower a JDM 4AGZE (Supercharged) engine would have if I changed the pulley on the supercharger, maybe replace the cam gears with some HKS or other Hi Performance ones and an HKS timing belt, change any other pulleys, etc…
Or, would I get more power (faster acceleration higher top end, etc...) if I did all this to a 20v instead. I think I like the idea of hearing the supercharger kick in though. Thanks! Last edited by is_tech; 04-17-2007 at 10:34 AM. |

with the vvt system on the 20v ur not going to get more power from oversized cam gears and different cam shafts thats what the vvt system does.

I was thinking of aluminum cam gears that are lighter than the factory originals, not larger ones.
Thanks! |
