4a-ge from a early 90's corolla gts?
Can i use a FWD corolla 4a-ge as a motor for my mr2? I have the mr2 tranny, ect. just wondering if i can use one of those. Also what about a 4a-fe (as a temp *like 1 year*) fix till i can find a decent 4age? would i need to grab the tranny from the 4a-fe or will mine mate up?

I don't know all of the specifics involved, but I do know it can be done.

You can. The Corolla GT-S used the same 4A-GE as the MR2 until 1990, when the MR2 got redesigned and the Corolla GT-S went to the smallport engine. They are a little stronger, make more power at realistic RPM, and are generally considered better than the bigport. You will need to find the smallport intake manifold and fuel rail if it doesn't come with the engine. While you can run the smallport on the bigport electronics, it works a lot better with the correct ECU. I believe you will want the entire GT-S harness and all its sensors as well, just to be on the safe side.
I wouldn't bother with a 4A-FE. It will bolt to the tranny and the motor mounts, but other than that, it's not a direct swap, and it's not what you want in the car. Also, do not take the "40K miles" line seriously. They probably have no idea how many miles are on those engines. Some are good and some need help. The importer may try to feed you the old line of BS about it being illegal to keep your car past 40K miles in Japan - there is NO SUCH LAW. You can drive your car as long as you like. It just gets harder as the car ages because of a rigid inspection process car owners have to go through, so most people give up and buy a new(er) car. |
