JDM 4agze smog! !!!! !!
Exclamation marks are in lieu of more colorful symbols...
I bought my second '88 and this time it's supercharged. Go me, right? wrong. The previous owner advertised "New JDM Motor 63k mi." Well, said I, sounds great. Never crossed my mind that the jdm motor has no egr and can't be smogged. Came with an old smog cert and everything... Anyway, short of doing what he did, (getting a mechanic to write "pass" on the egr line) how can I fix this problem (and lower NOX which is just over the limit). P.S. A mechanic told me I might be able to fix the emissions by advancing the timing a little, but there's still the lack of an egr valve. And i apologize if you've seen this question before, I'm sort of pressed for time and couldn't comb through the whole board but an hour of searching hasn't turned up anything useful. |

I had quite a conversation with the gentleman that headed the "Smog" program in Colorado one day. He told me that the easiest way to get a car to pass the tailpipe inspection was to 1. Change the oil. 2. Change the spark plugs (gapped correctly) and 3. get the engine hot before taking it in to be tested. (not overheating hot, but drive for 15 minutes hot).
Worked every time for me. As to how to get around a visual inspection, can't help you there. |

give it a really good tuneup plugs, oil, filters, not sure if jdm has 02 sensor but that too if it has one. take it and see what happens. if its just over limit now that should help.

OK guys are we talking new exhaust manifold and the adjacent tubing? That sounds like and easy replacement right?
Looking at my 88s/c I see you'll have to add a vacuum line from this pucklike device (EGR Vacuum Modulator) on the back of the cylinder head, which in turn is regulated by a VSV (for the EGR). (FYI-By the way, the steel vacuum lines assembly (loom) on a standard can be used on a S/C car BUT, a S/C vacuum loom can't be used on a N/A car..) Don't forget the Charcoal Canister (Fuel over flow device)? The BVSV in the thermo turns it on and off. Does the JDM have a O2 sensor? Is the harness ok with this? Just a few reality checks...and passing thoughts... Reminds me of a friend wanting to "add" electric mirrors.. sounds easy? Think again.. |
