S/C block w N/A parts-Opinions wanted

Discussion item:

What do you suppose are the issues associated with taking the extremely economical 8:1 compression S/C block and using the intake, inj's etc from the N/A model(s)-

Rough calculations seem to indicate a 16% increase in mileage due to less volume, which in turns takes a 32mpg car to 38-40mpg.

Yes, agreed it's slower but also greener?

1. Yes, the distributors/harnesses are slighly different
2. Yes, starters swap sides.
3. No, knock sensor not needed?
4. Yes, cheap low octane gas?
5.
6.

Less power means you'll stay on the throttle longer to accelerate. I don't see how less compression is going to make it more fuel efficient and keeping the overall chamber size the same, with lower comp pistons is going to give you more volume not less.

^ What he said, besides the 4age should run on low octane anyway if the timing is right. If you want economy get a 20v they are pretty good on gas.

How about issue #1 being a total lack of power?! I once dynoed an '85 NA->SC with the SC clutch ground lead disconnected, and I'll have to dig up the dyno sheets, yet I seem to remember it barely making 80hp (if that!). And it barely made redline. It was a dog.

If you really want to hypermile, stay away from the engine. Just get the revs down. Start with NA, then swap in a Paseo C-series with top-speed ratios, lighten the car, lower the car, increase tire diameter... then get the speedo recalibrated!
