What common engine swaps are smog legal for me? Please bless me with knowledge.

If you want to be smog legal go, udsm 4agze.

I'd personally swap in a 1zzfe, just because it's a newer engine.

As I understand CARB (which is little, given I don't live in CA!), any engine from that manufacture, for that year or later. So you could stuff a 4AGE from a model-year-newer Corolla. Yet stick with an MR2, for the harness swap simplicity.... which would mean an NA or SC. Here's to hoping you're not running an '89!
