clutch
I'm halfway through a JDM silvertop swap....is there any reason I need to replace clutch on of the silvertop? I'm leaving the motor stock in there and am budget building kinda...but idk if theres a rule of thumb of using new clutches used motors

It's deffinatly easier to swap the clutch out when the engine is out of the car. Lots of times when you get the engine with the trans you'll see that the clutch was pretty beat by the time you get it. It's only about 150 to swap it out and it's worth the headache to replace it while it's accesable. It's tough to do this swap on a budget because there are allways things that come up. I expected the swap to cost me around $1200 for engine and parts. I ended up buying the car with that money so it kinda put me up there. 700 for the car, 500 for the engine, 300 for wiring (found someones swapped harness used), 150 for clutch, and I have other things I need for the car to get it on the road. It's good to have a budget but expect to go over it.

well theres no way to tell how it is without taking it apart and having to realign it right? Thats what i really dont feel like doing what clutch did you pick up? i'm looking and thier all like 300 dollars...i see you can use a 2005 celica clutch but is that clutch strong enough not to slip?

I have a brand new one from Toyota. I bought it from someone but it was brand new when I got it. I got one from pepboys I think for my 87 regular one with no problems. You arent putting down too much power so just get a clutch from an 88 mr2 na and you will be set. I never heard about using an 05 celica clutch. Yes you will have to take it appart and realign but it's pretty simple. Do it while you have the chance.

so you are using a 16v clutch on your 20v? i read you cant do that because the flywheel is bigger...any thoughts on using stock pressure plate with performance clutch disks?

if you have a Carquest nearby have them order just a clutch disc, if you're really concerned..... last time I paid about $100 for the disc and the cover when I ordered them separately.
"realigning" them is easy... you can use a long extention (and move the clutch disc in a circular pattern until it looks lined up as you bolt the cover on...) or you can buy an alignment tool for about $5 |

It's a 4age engine the clutch you will use is from the later 4age engine with the 212mm clutch. I think the older ones had 210mm or something like that. Use the 88 or 89 clutch and you will be set. I researched for months before starting my 20v swap.

if you have a photo of the flywheel (even if the clutch plate is installed) I can tell you if it's a 200 or a 212 (there is no 210) |

I couldnt remember the exact number. I knew one was 212. I was close and I didnt make any promises that it was 210 so I'm clear right? lol. I used my original 88 flywheel when I did my swap because that one was just cleaned up and my 20v one was rusted up. Same exact thing just surface rust.

No you dont. As long as the clutch fits it you are good. Should be the 212mm one.

Good luck. Take pics. It's cool to look back when it's all done. Expect small stupid problems. My cap and rotor are bad and thats going to cost me about $50 that I wasnt expecting. Have fun and be careful.

hah its funny...on the pad and wheels website...he put the clutch on backwards...i have no idea how considering if you put it on backwards the surface on the disk can't make it to the flywheel because the springs get caught on the flywheel bolts..really not sure how he pulled that off

I never noticed that. Haha. I studied that site for months before I did the swap then I just kinda hopped on in and did it. Waiting on parts and money now so I can be on the road.
