How much power you looking for? Make sure to think about weight/hp and what your plans are for the car (auto-x, daily, drag only, all round).

The SC12 is never gonna get you 400 HP. At best you might see close to 275 with nitros.

Think 3SGTE and about $20,000 for 600 HP. Might get 400 with around $10,000.

No offense, but what the **** are you going to do with 4-600hp in a Mk1!?

That's Supra math, right there.

a 4age is good for ~350hp at best

I know a guy who shot for near 400hp, but could never hope to get there. too much $$$ because everything ahs to be custom made...

You want a 3sgte swap with a good TD06, and some of Chris K's talents on the block.

I don't know why in god's name you would want to do this though. I'm a quarter mile nut more than most people, but the MR2 made me appreciate and good handling car. Don't take that away from yourself... I can still keep up with alot of cars that I souldn't be able to. Learn some serious skill first, then go for the big motor. You'll kill yourself otherwise...

I agree totally and not just street skills either my dad has those you need on the track time to "let it all hang out" once your good there then the street is just a playground. You need to know where your limit is before you jump into a motor you can't handle.

"well i am looking for a swap to get me 400 or 600 but 400 would be good"

WOAH NELLY!
Slow down there chief.

First of all: 400hp on a 4A (afaik) has never been done.
The only way you're seeing close to that is with a fully built 4A-GTE (which by the way happens to be a ridiculously nice race motor). And any such motor is ging to be harsh as hell on the street. Especially considering you're talking about running straight C16 at all times.

Secondly: What in christs name are you going to do with a 600hp Mk1?!
Thats like a billion horsepower per pound.
Totally honestly, you would kill the suspension with that kind of platform.
Forget tranny, tires, brakes. That stuff would require tons of fab to get beefy enough parts to handle 600 horses. 600hp pushing 2300lbs means you need like 12" rear tires which means that on a MkI you would need completely custom rear bodywork and suspension.

Lets talk about 400hp. 400hp in a MkI gives you the power to weight ratio of 5.75-6.2 lb/hp (for 2300-2500lbs curb weight). This is equal to or substantially better than a C6 Z06 Ford GT or Dodge Viper, which are all essentially comfy race cars. This is still going to require at least 10" tires in the rear which is custom bodywork and custom suspension (which you will need anyway putting down that kind of torque).

Honestly I think 400hp is about the highest I would go in a MkI.
Now to obtain 400hp you are looking well past the 4A onto a 3S-GTE.
The only 4A that I can imagine pushing 400hp is probably running at least 10,000 rpms on straight race gas with a full race tranny (muncie, tremec, richmond, etc... actual race car stuff).
Even if you do a Mk1.5 (that's a MkI with a MkII (3S-GTE) engine, in case you dont know) you're still talking about a LOT of work and a lot of money.
At least 10 grand and I couldnt even tell you how many hours but it's in the triple digits.

Honestly if you want to go for a 400hp MkI be ready for a LOT of time and money. I think your best bet is to just give your car with its frunk full of money to one of the many gurus and let them do it right.

You think that hp/weight ration is bad, my uncle is putting a blown, injected, all alumnium 540ci big block Chevy into a chopped and sectioned 1932 Ford coupe. Motor should put out close to 1000hp at the crank and the car MIGHT weigh 2700lbs...

Ok, if racing was legal on the streets. You wouldn't need anywhere near 400hp to beat Civic and Talon kids. You just need to be a good driver and have about half of that 400hp

the 20v is so incredibly beyond overrated.. it should have been the stock na motor, and the sc should have been the premier motor. its absolutely no substitute for a gze. the 20v silvertop is cool because its cheaper than all hell, marginally more than a regular old 16v imported replacement. the blacktop is expensive and still slow. it doesnt make sense to me.
