MK1 V6'ers...why?

I am not asking this to be offensive but more so for research....

Why did you/are you swapping in the v6 to the MKI?

Do you feel that you need more torque? I have a s/c running about 10psi and it pulls nicely, but would more torque be even better.

For those of you who run the v6 already how do you like it? Does the car feel squirrelly at all and is the handling affected at all by the weight?

Lastly does anyone know the weight of the stock 4a or 4agze motor? Rough numbers will do.

Thanks guys! Hopefully this will answer people’s future questions so you don’t have to repeat yourselves...

Weasy,
I have a couple reasons for my wanting to switch. The biggest is that I've done a turbo 4a before, and while it was fun, it seemed too easy. I bought all the stuff to build my ultimate gte, but I dunno, it seems like I should be doing something different this next time around. Also, I've driven a v6 mk2, and it was fast enough to satisfy me, and it was an NA (Thanks Seth!). I guess part of it is that I want to do something different too. I've never met a mk1 v6'er either, so I thought I'd try to be the first in the area. That, and I've always wanted to make a twin turbo, but the 4a is not exactly an ideal candidate for that. I also figure that what I want to do with the body (sortof a Renault 5 Turbo rear end) would match well with the kind of rubber required to keep that much torque and power in check. I've been coming up with all sorts of designs that I really want to try. Also, now that I got my WRX, I can sacrifice the mr2 to the lift for long periods of time. Also, reliability is not as critical as I have a new car to drive around, and I can save the MR2 for track days and meets.

Best guess about the weight? Um... raw block is like #75, crank is about #30, head is about #30... umm... not sure what else. I know that I can't pick up an assembled long block by myself, but I can pick up a short block. All the accessories are heavy too...

Probably because we let them test drive our v-6 two's and then they realise what they've been missing. HEHehehehehee.

I think a strong motivator is the fact that it doesn't sound like a four-cylinder. Plus there's always some desire to do something sort of out there, something that you don't see every day.

hmmm, I wonder what it'd take to get a small block V8 (like a 327 or a 350) into a MK1????........... But then you'd need a bigger gas tank, lol

no point! The v6 can have more power and better fuel economy if you wanted them too...
PM Canadam on this forum about the engine swap...he may be interested!

Lets just say when im done with my MK1 it will be lighter then stock and faster :P Maybe not as crazy as 1.5's but more fun to drive.

IIRC engine with all accessories is about 300 lbs and with trans about 380ish. I dont remember for certain, but I think these were close.

Drive one and you will understand.

There is no replacement for displacement

I have had my Mk1 V6 done for almost 2 years now and I honestly havent been satisfied by another car.

and by putting the V6 in it was ok to put the "I <3 Torque" sticker in my back window
