Hello everyone,

This is my first car purchase and it goes with out saying my first MR2!
I've been saving for sometime for a car between college and I couldn't quite find the right import for me. Most of my peers in the area have 240sx's and F body's. The ones with bigger houses have Evo's, STi's and Vette's ...go figure. I wanted something with sports heritage from Japan, rear wheel drive, likely a 4cyl, manual and with turbo potential. I figured, "Damn that is rather typical of someone my age!" So long story short I came across the MR2, fitting that description perfectly while being well above the average (IMO of course).

The car...

1993 MR2 Turbo
Red/Black (Faded / Torn) respectively
5spd

I purchased it from a guy with too many cars and too little space in Joliet, IL. Its not in great condition but I've helped out friends with their projects from oil changes to motor swaps, so I dove into the MR2 glory head first and still feel good about the choice. I've done quite a bit of basic and not so basic maintenance so far and the car has mostly been co-operative with it :D

Just one last thing I have to narrow down. I have a rather rough idle. Literally overnight it developed after a few 1st to 2nd gear pulls the day before. (I haven't boosted over 12psi btw) The cars starts fine and warms up like normal. Once its at operating temp it idles a lil rough at about 750~800rpm When I blip the throttle the return to idle is poor. It will hover at 750 for a second and drop to 500 then idle around 450~500 15sec later it slowly (over 2sec period) reaches 800. Then sorta repeats with a less drastic surge. Here is a list of parts that I haven't replaced but, have already ordered due to the questionable condition of the ones installed, are...

Oem cap, rotor and wires and a fram fuel filter. Also on the to-do list is clean the TB and ISCV.

^Do any of you guys have other parts/tips I should look into?^

Vacuum so far checks out (no hissing) and checked hose connections.

I know my turbo is shot. I.e burns some oil and has some shaft play. Could a bad turbo cause poor idle symptoms too?

I apologize for the tangent at the end...

Thanks for reading my introduction; I hope find myself meeting some MR2 enthusiast in the area.

Hi. I'm from Estonia and very big fan of MR2. I like the car, because of it's midengine. And because of that i would like to call all of you to help me on my big dream. It's what i'm dream for over 10 years. My biggest dream is to race in rally. I'm only 23 years old, but least i have a goal to make. I'm working all-day long to feed my family and pay taxi's. The racing is the biggiest dream that i ever have. So. If there is anyone who think's that he/she can help me or at least support me, please aswer me to my e-mail ants002@hot.ee. To be honest i would very like some donation's. In our country the cheapiest MR2 cost's 35000.-, what's about 2900 US Dollars and about 2350 EUR's. But that's the money i have to earn by working almoust half year. I hope that everybody understand my problem and the text, because english is not the language i speak every day :)

Wishing for all you good, Ants.

Little about me,

Name is Anthony, from Fort Lauderdale, FL.

Been into RWD and drifting vehicles for awhile, Ive owned 3 240's within a year span lol. 2 hatches & one coupe.

Sold my coupe, and was thinking about buying another 240, but decided to be radical and different, and came across this MR2. Its an 86, so I'm guessing its considered an MK1? 135,000 original miles, car has only had one owner. Title is actual title from 1987, a/c, p/s, as far as I seen no rust. Inside is beautiful.

Now, I don't know 1 thing about these car except the fact that they have great handeling? If thats even true.

So I'm here basically to learn about these vehicles, how to upgrade mines, parts and what not.

Cause I literally know absolutely nothing about these cars, if anyone is around my area and wants to help or anyone on the forum it would be greatly appreciated.

Pics.

Hello all! Just want to say hello. I may get an MR2 if I can't get a Supra, which has been a first choice ($$, scarcity.) I have discovered that many Supra owners also own MR2s or did own an MR2.

I had a friend in college who owned an electric blue MK1, and I have a friend who owns a Spyder, and we rode in it with the top down (fun car.)

In the meantime, I'll enjoy reading about your rides and learning about these cars.:D

Quick question: anyone here tall and have had no problems fitting into an MR2 and being comfortable? Thanks in advance.

Well I figured affter a month or two of just reading from the fourm I would finaly do my intro post.

Well that was not that hard, any way I recently traded for a 1985 mr2 with a broken down bike and a case of beer. It has some slight rust took care off that motor smoked more than a smoker, but the worst thing was it had an auto. I know seams like a waste but no worrys I will not let that abomonation stand, curently working it over to what It needs a 5speed.

I'm very strongly considering an MR2 (2nd gen Turbo) that someone has offered me as a trade for my modified E36 BMW.

I've actually owned a Celica All-trac (GT four to the rest of the world) in the past and I LOVED the sound of that 3s-gte. I also had a 5s-fe powered celica before that. For a while I was into the DSM world and owned a couple of very high HP Eclipse/talons (Couldn't turn worth a damn, but the best car ran in the 11's and made around 450 bhp). Also dabbled into the drift world for a bit with an s13.

Anyway, all this time I had sort-of forgotten about the existence of the MR2 turbo. Partially because they're rare and partially because I assumed there was no chance in hell I would fit in one (I'm 6'6 and not scrawny)

But this deal has me curious. It's for an imported JDM 1990 turbo with a claimed 125,000 kms on it, some basic bolt-ons (Carbon hood, exhaust, BOV, unnamed suspension work)

So I'm about to find out if I fit in one, and if I like to drive them (which I'm pretty certain I will) and just wanted to say hello! as chances are I'll be around here more often.

Hi guys,
Not an actual MR2 owner yet but I soon hope to be. I'm coming out of the Turbo Buick (Buick Grand National) community after being there for a few years. I love the GNs and they are monsters, but I've decided to get into something a little more "fun" to drive, and I know the MR2 can produce outside the 1/4. I love turbo cars and am not looking for anything but.

I'm interested in MKII cars...any specific year I should look/look out for? Any tips on buying or where to look? I have been searching around on this forum a little and have began to do my reading.

I have a few general questions, and would appreciate opinions on a local MR2 I found on Craigslist, but will wait for your approval to post the link...

Thanks!

Hi guys, I bought a 86 MR2 two months ago. Car drove really bad on the way home, also failed emission twice. Had to fix some stuff and now it's my daily. I love these MR2. Glad I'm finally able to own one.

I wish I had found this site a few years ago. Right around when I turned sixteen, my mom wrecked her mk1. She told me that if I fixed it up and got it running, it was mine. Easier said done. Even though it just had some minor damage and only needed a new headlight, front fender, and hood, it took me 2 years to find them and another year to repair it in my spare time. I finally just finished it about 2 months ago. Here is the final picture:

Hey guys im newly registered to the site but been on as a guest for a few months now. I've been into hondas for years but once I saw the mr2 I fell in love. So here's my problem. I got the car a few months ago but the coolant seems to leak out of the car. The car runs good and strong. But as I drive the car gets hot and the coolant bubbles out of the resivour (I think that's how you spell it , its the holding tanks for the coolant). So when my car overheats I pullover and add more coolant by taking off the top to the hose and pour it in. I don't pour it into the tank directly because it is already full. Please help. Thanks a lot. its a red 1988 NA
