Unhappy Supercharger Clutch

Fellow antique lovers,

I just took my 1988 Mk1 S/C into the dealer for a new timing belt and S/C clutch. They called me an hour later and said "sorry, we can no longer get the S/C clutch. Toyota has 1 brand new S/C left, though, for $3500".

I told them no thanks. I'll put up with the snapping noise every time I hit the gas. It still works, just makes a lot of racket.

Anyone know what my options are for a resurface/rebuild? I'm in the SoCal area.

Also, can anyone point me to a link for the ABV Mod that still works? I'm intrigued, but the couple links I've seen in this forum come up 404.

Thanks a bunch.

you sure it's not the bearing in the clutch assembly? as far as i know that bearing is a readily available one (not like the s/c internal bearings), you could pull the clutch assembly off and do it yourself perhaps.

try this

Thanks for the ABV info. I'll apply it one I'm sure the S/C can take the extra torque.

I'm pretty sure the clutch surface is gone. It makes one loud snap when it engages, but spins quiet. I heard a rumor that there may be a place around here that can resurface it.

Cheers.

resurface? it's just a electro magnetic clutch.

and the abv mod is only done once you've installed a larger crank pulley. personaly i remove the abv altogether and block off where it was.

I've yet to take it apart, and I only have a tech manual for my previous '86 non S/C, but as I understand it the electromagnet pulls the spring loaded metal plate connected to the S/C shaft against the pulley, which has a frictional surface, or at least , mine used to.

Sounds right to me. I've got two sc 12's on the bench right now that I'm rebuilding and the clutch surface is really uneven on one of them. I didn't know you could resurface those. If your contact works out let us know. There is also a very thin washer that sits in front of the clutch plate for spacing. That might help you with your clanking once you get it resurfaced.
Also, the '88/'89 BGB has a 5 or six page write-up on the SC that you might want to check out:
MKI 88/89 online BGB?

HI-

SAW YOUR POST ABOUT A BUM CLUTCH ON THE S/C UNIT.

I BLEW ONE UP SEVERAL YEARS AGO AND STILL HAVE A BASKET OF PARTS.(1989)
IN THE GARAGE ATTIC.

DO YOU KNOW EXACTLY WHICH PIECES YOU NEED TO CORRECT?

"Blew it up"? Did it literally fly apart or what exactly? I didn't know you could blow these up.

yea it was ugly.
one of the shafts of the sc12 somehow got stripped and the drive gears got all misaligned and phooey--
the cases, impellers etc are all good but the 2 gears that drive are lunched.

if you need sc12 parts get back w me and i'll drag the box out and take photos of the parts--

by the way, have you ever used the mr2 trader?
i need so let my 89 s/c racecar go and want it to go to a sincere mr2 lover.

I'll let you know. I'm rebuilding both the SC12's I have now. OP could probably swap the metal clutch though.

Some advice?

I've found a brand new a/c clutch magnet (has hole in center) still wrapped in Toyota paper is this useful to anybody..is it valuable??

Nice paperweight ?
---------------
Saw your pictures.
What's some good advice for anyone doing a n/a to s/c conversion from a builders standpoint. What was your hardest obsticle to overcome?

Contemplating another s/c project car soon..

Thanks,

mr2tim

LOL. I bought a toyota a/c clutch on ebay thinking it might work for the sc as well, but it was a little big. I've done a couple of sc swaps to na's and the toughest part seems to be finding the wiring harness for the sc motor and finding the right size tranny axles. That's why on this one I'm going to stick with the lighter C50 and just use the n/a stock axles. Good luck.
