German made ABV
I recently purchased an Air Bypass Valve (ABV) from Rockauto. This part is an OEM part for Saab 900's from the late 80's. Its made by Bosch in Germany!
My original Yota ABV wasn't working when cold at all. I had cleaned it out and lubed it with silicon during a previous teardown. The car choked and sputtered going up steep hills in 1st or 2nd gear. Also, I've done an SC14 upgrade to further muddy the waters. So, it finally arrived this monday, and I thought I'd hook it up like factory with the ECU controlled vacuum switch and one way vacuum line fitting. WRONG. I only got 5 PSI boost. So I hooked it up with a direct vacuum line connection coming from near the intake manifold. Problem solved. Car runs good enough to drive when cold. Smooth transitions from NA to boosted intake running. Goes up steep inclines in low gear fine. Idles through parking lots good too. Here's the Bosch part number 0 280 142 105 Here's a picture of the part found at Vortech Engineering website (Rockauto sells the same for considerably less): Vortech Engineering: Viewing product: Standard Bypass Valve This might be a first of its kind mod in the U.S. I think those crazy Aussies (Australians) did it first though. Oh one other thing. The Yota ABV weighs 3 lbs. The Bosch part weighs 3 onces. And you will need to do some minor fabbing to make the plumbing happen. I used copper 3/4 plumbing 90 and 45 degree plumbing fittings to make it work. Painted the copper with aluminum paint in case you're wondering if I had the bad taste to put bare copper in an engine bay. |
