I never unplugged the ACV.. so I'm not sure.. I left the car running the garage many times. I never had a problem with idle or reving when NOT under load. The only things it did more often right before the problem started to be more bogging then hesistating was backfire a few times when I was in reverse years ago.. .. And, then one night I got on it a little,a nd it started doing all sorts of weird stuff.. Like right when it was about to get into boost the car would lean out and I would back off the throttle..then hammer the throttle again, and it would boost fine.. but then hesitate like crazy. That is when the problems started to get even worse, and there was more bogging, etc. Maybe my coil is weak. I have another coil from an MR2.. not sure if it's an NA coil or a SC coil. But, I'll have to give that a try. Maybe something with the ECU trying to send a higher signal to the coil after the ECU learns about how the car is running, and my coil can't keep up with the instructions, thus not working correctly.. who knows.. but I'll try it. History of my car is : 87 na auto. converted to 87 SC 5spd with C-52 trans Bought with 59k back in 1994 Now, ~105k.. and got the gze out of an 85SC swap car that was running w/o an intercooler, and had a no boost problem The gze had around the same mileage as my 87, so that worked out good in that sense. and we never found out why it wasn't boosting.. but it boosted after we put the engine in my 87.. and dind't have the bogging problem until about 1.5 hours on the way back home from the engine swap.. and it started to hesitate a little when pulling out in 1st gear. |

Hmmmm, I wonder if the intercooler is the problem, it is the right ecu(gze)? Yea it is, I remember you saying that you tried diffirent ones......have you ran it without the intercooler, as well? What is the gain, or draw back to not having a i/c? Is the intercooler in good condition, maybe it has a crack in it somewhere......I checked mine with a shop vac and soapy water(made it blow instead of suck) the hose fit perfectly to the i/c and I clamped it on there, I would cover the open end of the i/c and turned the vac on and off every few seconds and see if there were bubbles forming anywhere. Make sure its dried out on the inside if you do this, I made sure by blowing through the i/c with an electric leaf blower. Just a thought.....Did you check to see that you are getting spark during this problem? Like I did in the other post. Could it even be an OVER boost problem? Or is that considered lean out? I am stumped other than that.

No.. not the intercooler. .. I bought a good used one before we even put the motor into my 87, and had that pressure tested.. and everything is how it should be now. Yes.. it is the correct gze ecu for sure. I'll just try another coil.. or buy a new one.. I think that may be what it is. |

Coil is a coil is a coil?
I changed to a 87 N/a coil on my 89 S/C recently in a pinch with no change in the car. The Toyota OEM #'s were different on each. Kinda makes ya wonder?

No.. I barely have enough time for my MK2.. barely.. I'm one of those people that have too many cars.. and they really require a full time job for each of them. Maybe this weekend I'll mess around with my MK1 for a bit.. Atlteast get it started up, and wash it.. then replace the coil with this other one I have lying around. |

I heard that, as I too have multiple cars, all 1st gen mr2's (4) and a '71 Pontiac Catalina two door, my grand dad left me when he passed, it needs to be restored, I had a spread sheet of what 2 I did what to, but my computer took a dump, and I couldnt get it back, now I keep a paper trail and all receipts instead of scanning them in. And the '71 keeps getting pushed back further and now it's been 10 years, so that has to be next. Well like to hear when you get it up n running, this Tuesday I should be sending out for my NST pulley's, if nothing rears its ugly head for me to dump more miney into.......cheers.

Hey Bro, how's that fractured cranshaft tip, the new crankshaft key and the pulley working out for ya?
That same condition cost me $400+ by the time everything got fixed. |

Great.. thanks.. Well, unfortunetly.. some really bad news. I'm going to have to sell some things off my MK1 so that I can afford an engine for my MK2. Found out that I have an oil leak at the head, and it's pretty bad. So, instead of fixing that.. I'm just going to get a GEN3 motor which is big money.. but I like to do things the right way, or not do them at all. So, I won't be fixing my MK1 this year. |

Thats a drag.......well if you want to get rid of some stuff, I still would like to have an original crank pulley, so let me know what you would like for it, and see if I can get some money together, as this thing has cost me about 1500-1700 now so let me know, like giving my money to a good cause(MK2 is a good cause!!)Good luck!
