4agze vs 4age block
my 88 supercharged Mk I developed a huge appetite for coolant in the last 6 months. Not leaking, but using 1 litre in 100 miles. Head gasket?, but no milk in oil, and compression about 130 psi in each cylinder. Going through the archives I found examples of blown head gaskets with similar results, combustion gas leaking into coolant over pressurizing radiator cap.
TEST: ran hose from radiator overflow tube taped to outside of car with outlet near drivers window. At idle, low speed no problems; but 10 seconds after max power water/steam comes pouring out of overflow. Obviously a small leak from cylinder to coolant- ok at idle, but at power pressure leaks through and builds up in coolant system. Remove head, gasket looks ok. ? looks like small horizontal crack in #2 cylinder. gee darn. this is more expensive will a later 4age replace the 4agze block? Any items to look for? Plan A: put all my AGZE internals (crank, pistons, head) on a 4AGE block problems? thanks gene olson so cal |

sorry for hijacking this thread but are you saying that a geo and by geo you mean one that uses a 1.6L engine like say a late 80's tracker uses the same block as a 4age because if thats the case then i got some fun work to do

^^ eh, close enough for this discussion.
the predecessor to the geo prizm was the chevy nova... which in the 80's had a 4ac or a bigport 4age.... the prizm's in 88-89 had the 4af, prizm's (all but gsi) in 90-92 had a 4afe, and the gsi's had a smallport 4age. if the head is off of the block you can tell based on what the pistons look like. There are only tiny little valve cutouts in the US gze pistons. The gze's should have a knock sensor in them (location depends on what generation you have) but as another mentioned, so do the high comp/smallport n/a 4age's. |

I actually did a little research and for anyone interested.....
1990–1992 Geo Prizms were powered by the 4A-FE or optional 4A-GE engine. 1993–1997 Geo Prizms were powered by the 4A-FE or optional 7A-FE engine. 1998–2002 Chevy Prizms were equipped with Toyota's 1.8 L 1ZZ-FE 2000–2002 models included VVT-i |
