What are they supposed to do for you?

To identify your association with a certain group of players who share a common interest. And to make you feel cool and included, in case you have no friends in real life.

so they dont help group you together should a bunch of people with the same tag sign on at the same time?

no. It does nothing more than prestige mode.... makes you look different and says "look! I waste more time on here than you do!"
