upgrade suggestions for 3sgte
So i finally went for dyno couple of days ago, 196hp/200 torque but the car is running rich at 15psi. i'll post my results...
the only mod is fujitsubo exhaust. i'm thinking intake and boost controller next but probaby need a full engine managment system. i've read that 93 and up gen3 jdm's are programmed for fail safe mode over 16psi. I thought stock ct20 was 13psi but mine is at 15. i've heard of cheap ways to push the fail safe to 18psi. i'm looking for recommendations for intake (Apexi power intake?), boost controller and options for fuel/engine management since this can vary from a few hundred to thousands. |

if your only making 196hp on a gen3 3s,@15psi, somthing is wrong.
gen3's routinely make 100whp more @ ~18-19psi. |

You have several options when it comes to intakes. The Apex'i is definitely one of the more common intakes and does the job. It is especially nice because it has a heat shield. There is a group buy on those intakes right now. Take a look at the group buy section.
Are you looking for a electronic boost controller or manual? You have a lot of options here. There have been rave reviews on the manual boost controller from EMS powered. If you want/can spend a little more, an electronic boost controller is nice because of the adjustable presets (track, street, etc.). Some options include: 1. Blitz Dual SBC as well as several others manufactured by Blitz 2. HKS EVC as well as many others from HKS 3. AEM TruBoost (boost controller and boost gauge in one). 4. Greddy Profec As far as stand-alone fuel management systems go, there are probably only 3 good options. It is up for debate but from what I've read and seen, the most commonly used ones are: 1. Power FC 2. AEM EMS 3. Hydra Nemisis There are other options out there, but these seem to be the ones my friends run and that have good reviews in terms of ease of use and effectiveness. What other modifications are you planning. The power primer is definitely a good place to start reading. If you haven't already, you might want to consider upgrading your intercooler, downpipe, and exhaust. If you are looking for these items, check out Berk Technology (berktechnology.com). They will have some options for you as well. Depending on your budget and your power goals, you could also consider a ROM tune by ATS (atsracing.net). They are a board sponsor and specialize in rom tunes. If you are planning on sticking with a CT20b, this should suffice, saving you a lot of money. But if you are planning a bigger turbo, a stand-alone would be more beneficial. Good luck! I'm looking forward to seeing the progress. **Edit: The cheap way of doing things usually ends up costing more than it would have doing it right the first time. I've learned that the hard way. |

presure2,
stock gen3 is rated at 241hp; from what i've read that's at 13psi. considering 15 yrs and 106k on my car, 196 is not too bad but as far as i know no engine mods have been done except a Fujitsubo Legalis-R exhaust so unless it's a rom tune i don't know why i'm running 15psi. o6spdracer, Thanks for the info. can you point me to the group buy for Apexi? I looked everywhere but can't find it. I think i'm gonna go for electronic boost controller like the HKS or Blitz. I think ATS is the way to go; my goal is 300rwhp with the CT20b and no major engine work but that may be pushing it. if i'm already at 15psi, then with intake, tuning and 18psi there's no way i can get there. i had the car checked before dyno and no turbo leaks or any problems were found. I put redline 5w30 and a bigger filter. it was a hot day (around 27C) but 196 was the highest i got, the other runs ranged to as low as 189. |

that 240hp rating is at the crank not at the wheels.

yea, i keep forgetting the mr2 is restricted by the crappy SMIC.
in a celica, the 3rd gen is rated @ 255hp (flywheel). we currently have 2 diffrent guys with basicly the same setup (intake, exhaust boost controller, and FCD) making 285whp under 17psi. ![]() i would definetly suggest a good 3" exhaust, a nice intake, a good IC, boost controller of your choice, active style map clamp(FCD) and maybe water injection, and you'll be good for 300whp or really close to it at under 20psi. ![]() |
