On going progress
I am going to start seriously stripping the car soon. It's going to get nasty - stay tuned.

time to dig this one back up from the grave...
So, now that im unemployed, and still trying to upgrade the 2, i figured i'd help in the of the weights of the things i decided to take off the car as best i can. First, the reservoir for the washer fluid, holds what seems to be 1 gallon of water, i googled it and it says water weighs about 10 lbs. plus the weight of the plastic container is about 1.5-2 lbs with the water pump attached to it. next, i found this weird hard plastic triangle shaped mount underneath the engine bay attached to the sub-frame, doesn't seem to do anything, the car is running fine without it, seems to weight about 3 lbs. i threw it away so i can't test the weight, but it was solid rubber on a metal mounting bracket so it wasn't lite. next, i cut the lines for the air bag/air bag sensors, lost about 1 lbs in wires there, but the best things to get rid of if your using and aftermarket steering wheel like me and harrisracing is, ditch the stock air bag which here is listed as 4lbs, also behind the stereo attached to the body of the car, is a small ECU looking thing, it's the ecu for the air bag. about 2lbs there, plus, underneath the front bumper support, next to the headlights, are 2 air bag sensors maybe weigh about 1.5lbs for both with the wire looms and wires 6 inches long attached to them. last, well im still poking around for more things to remove so stay tuned in case i get something else, or harrisracing does as well. Im going to weigh my 2 soon, i have already removed many things that HR has well, spare tire/jack, heat shield on turbo, headlights (i have a phoenix power front end conversion, made of only fiberglass) airbag stuff, A/C compressor & pulley, a/c condenser, SSAC down pipe, with a 3" apexi b-pipe, and a blitz mandrel bent Nur-spec exhaust, which by the way is very light for it's size. my personal goal is to loose 250-300 lbs, i think without removing all the interior/panels/stereo that is going to be hard. hell, even 200lbs lost would be nice ![]() |

From the grave
After MANY more weight reductions, I ended up with the following weight.
2293 lbs with only a couple gallons of fuel. The final split L-R was 52.7% left with me in it. F-R was 39.9% front. This car at 260 rwhp is going to FLY. I have a FULL CAGE in the car that is actually heavier than it needs to be, but the rest is gutted. I'm going to start cutting on the back of the car soon to get the F/R weight more balanced. Mods are as follows: Gen 3 3sgte swap. (w/ tranny) Wiseco .020 forged pistons ARP headstuds ACT XACT Flywheel TRD clutch Hardened CV joints Apexi Power FC w/ handheld AEM UEGO gauge Megan Racing SMIC w/ Berk fan and shroud Walbro FP Tein SS coilovers w/ tops Full bushing replacement 91 brakes w/ Porterfield R4E pads GUTTED CAR fiberglass T-tops Fiberglass engine lid aero ducting through hood Full roll caged w/ dual horizontal bars Gutted wiring (only what I need to run - SAVED 30 #!) ST sway bars w/ mounts in front. Megan Downpipe 3" 16 x 8 RX-7 wheels on back w/ 245 hoosiers 16 x 7.5" mustang wheels up front on 225 hoosiers Weight still left to be removed: Rear trunk lid -> fiberglass or carbon Remove rear wing - replace with Carbon Racing wing cut random steel out of back of car (way too much steel back there for me). Granted my car is not built to any rules other than SCCA safety (not for any specific class), so it's probably lighter than a general racecar. I would go NASA anyway. Patrick |

Final price tag came out to $13,800!! And I started with a 700.00 CAR!
Granted I had to do 2 engines because the Gen3 motor I got had a smoked piston, so that was 2 grand extra right there. I basically went through EVERYTHING on the car and it ended up costing money. I have removed an insane amount of stuff off of this car. Let's hope it hauls a$$! Patrick Last edited by HarrisRacing; 02-23-2009 at 11:02 AM. |

i wana see the quarter mile times on that beast. Only 260rwhp? crank that turbo up and get it tuned, with 540cc injectors you should be able to get safely to 280-300rwhp no problem.

HAHA yeah I know. only 260 is in totally reliable road race trim. Our races are 20 minutes long. I will be bringing it to the 1/4 mile to see what it does soon enough.

Me with racing gear on was 2507 lbs.
Weighted as follows: Corner weights DRY 2293 LEFT RIGHT % FRONT 443 451 39.0 REAR 689 710 61.0 % 49.4 50.6 W/ Driver 2510 LEFT RIGHT % FRONT 528 473 39.9 REAR 766 743 60.1 % 51.6 48.4 We jacked the front right coilover 1/4 turn (increased height) and made it take an additional 12 lbs. I'm sure we could get weights of a full stock MR2 turbo somewhere else and reverse engineer what I have removed and what's on the list.
Regarding the dash: the wires to run most everything alone were 30 lbs. I weighed those and I figure with that and pulling the heater tubes / ac stuff up there I lost about 100 lbs right there - actually I'm pretty sure of it. My list is pretty complete until that stage and if I look I'm sure I can find where I wrote it down. ALSO the car is still caged and that was about 150 lbs there. I could gut the passenger door as well. I wish I had been this meticulous later on...sorry eventually I had to get the work done - I figured 99% of what a "normal" person would pull out of a normal street car was listed. I will be cutting EVERYTHING out of the trunk. It will be a shell of a trunk when I'm done with a fiberglass lid. Moving wing to mount up by shock tower / roll bars. |

HAHA
Just realized that your post from before was, "How much did it weigh when you got it"....I thought it read, "How much did it weigh when you got IN it". Sorry...I don't know what it weighed when I got it. Full optioned turbo car w/ t tops - EXCEPT NO POWER STEERING NOR ABS. Patrick |

. man! i have a turbo t-top but it has P/S, and i know that has to be heavy with wires, ecu, pump, fluid and rack.... i once had a N/A swapped to turbo with no power anything, it was only 50lbs heavier than a n/a coupe! i think once im done taking out most of the interior stuff and passenger seat, i will be weighing in more like 2450-2500. which for a daily driver isn't heavy at all. Keep us posted, i wana see some time slips already ![]() |

Well then
I might bring the car to the lemons race just to have it there...that or we can see if I can give you a ride around the track in my EVO X - I'm a big helper with that track.
I am the team leader for the "Low Budget Racing" Team in the OLD SKOOL 280Z. I'm sure we'll have time to hang out with each other. Which Beamer is that?? Is it a local guy from LA or from TX? Looking forward to meeting you at the 24 hours of Lemons. |
