This thread has exactly what you need. $1300 doesn't really seem that out of this world, it's a pretty big job. You might be able to find a place to do it cheaper. Good luck! http://www.mr2board.com/forums/mk-1-...ad-gasket.html [/Bullwinkle Voice]

If you have no experience in fixing cars then don't try to replace a headgasket or fix a head...Take it to a mechanic that knows what he is doing to save you future headaches

i want to chime in do not attempt the head gasket job yourself its hard for a beginner and impossible for someone with no previous mechanical experience ur not going to get a better price from a mechanic than at least 900 for that and if u get it for that he's probably goin to screw you some other way if the head is cracked then your best option to get a new engine b/c for one that is no longer going to be as dependable and secondly a new engine may even be cheaper than the removal of the head and the machine work and the installaiton of the head plus the extra part to remove all of this gaskets and etc just trying save u some money

Hi. I just got my 85 MR2 2 weeks ago and plan on keeping it (I own 4 other cars) but as far as your problem--it could be expensive. A blown head gasket is better than a cracked head but either way the head has to come out to get resurfaced. You might also need valves adjusted and other work depending on how long the engine was operated after the gasket went (if that is indeed the problem). If it's just resurfacing the head and replacing the head gasket, parts should not be very expensive. Most of the cost is labor--I'm not familiar enough yet to know how hard it is to remove the head but $1300 might be a bit high. Best of luck, hope you are able to get your car back on the road soon. Cheers. --Bruce

start learning
If you want to learn how to change head gaskets,(unfortunatly)get a fiero with the 2.5 I4. that's what I learned on. just remember, you are tearing down the whole topend of the engine, and like I tell people when I do this for them, things can really snowball fast! Whatever you budget for parts, triple it. things add up fast. thats why its so expensive. these heads alone cost over $500 last I checked. I recomend that if you are going to own one of these cars, learn to start working on it yourself. Japanese cars are not that hard, you just need sockets and wrenches in the 8,10,12,14,17. that will almost tear apart the whole car. good luck!
