Unhappy transmission

i just put in a transmission that has around 100k on it and i noticed at first that 2nd didn't seem to want to go in. when you shift into pretty much all the lower gears...2, 4, reverse... you haft to pull the shift knob back and hold it sometimes just to get it into gear. the tranny seems to stift into gear sometimes and other times when i try and shift it is almost like putting the car in neutral.....the gear just isn't there. i also have play in the shift knob on the left of second and the right of reverse. could this be my shift bushings or the linkage? or is it my tranny?

any advice would help...thanks

try and check the linkage make sure it is free and if that doesn't work try flushing out the tranny or maybe checking the slave/master cylinders to make sure everything is working fine.

i was having my friend look at the linkage as i was shifting through gears and going into 1,3,and 5 the linkage goes down fine.....but for the other gears....it seems that its not pulling up enough to get it into gear.

On some transmissions Toyota uses a plastic bushing that actuates the shift rod in and out of the transmission. It sits on top of the shift rod (that slides in and out) and is held in place by a pivoting arm that is bolted to the transmission. The upper shift cable attaches to the pivoting arm, you might be able to see it from above.

The pivot arm that moves the transmission rod in and out should have just a very small amount of free play before the rod moves.

If that bushing is missing it might be your problem. It's square on the outside with a round hole in the middle about 1/4" thick.

Good luck.

i found out what my problem was. when i put on the shift linkage i forgot the washers and the bushing was getting pushed out of one of the linkage causing me to louse my 2nd and reverse. i pushed it back in and put the washers in place and now it shifts like butter. lol i had a shop saying it was bad syncros....lol they were going to have me pay out the ass to fix it.

Its the linkage, most likely the bushings in it. My friend had the exact same problem in his Bmw after we did a swap to manual.
