shifting problem

Can't shift into any gears, seems to be locked into place. I assume there are problems with the shift control cable or select control cable, but I'm not sure what exactly and need some help. It's an '86.

Can you shift it with the car off?

check to see if you clutch is working right. if its not fully disengaging then you wont be able to shift. i had this problem with my 85 and it ended up being the slave cylinder. it was leaking fluid and had to be replaced.

Me and seasame looked at it.
pushing in the clutch pedal does disengage the clutch.
It was weird, i was able to move it 1-4 but not 5th and reverse. then i played with the cables a little more and it got locked kinda in neutral.
there doesnt seem to be anything in the way of the mechanical shift levers.

Looks like you need to bleed the line and go from there.

oh, i read what you wrote wrong. If the lever moves like its supposed to what is the issue? Again, does it shift when the car is off?

i had a problem when i just put in my new tranny that i lost my second and reverse gears. it ended up being that the bushings in the shift linkage was comming out. if its getting stuck in gears.... take the shift linkage off of the tranny and see if you can move them freely. if you can then it looks to be a problem with your tranny. try changing the oil in it if thats the case.

if your shift cables dont move when you take them off the tranny then you need to replace them because you probably have a kink in them. also take off the shift boot and check to see if there is anything keeping the shift lever from moving.

Sixafterfour and I worked late on it tonight. about 2 maybe 2 and a half hours getting it going.
pulled off the cables and the levers wouldn't move.
We drained the transmission fluid, and filled it up with some synthetic stuff.
After that we moved the levers around and around and around. it started getting into gears and such.
After that, with the car jacked up, we put it in first and let the oil warm up a bit. Then with some luck we got it into reverse. played around with the gears for a bit and thing started to shift a bit more normal again.

Took it off the jack stands and took it for a test drive and everything seems good!
I kinda suspect that the ends of the reverse gear are a little gnarled up. though, but its in working order.
