the cherry bomb is the one usually referred to as a glass pack. It does crack the fiberglass after a while not necassarily known as breaking it in though. It just gets less annoying. 1985-1989 Toyota MR2 - Pacesetter Exhaust System - Monza - Black Stainless Steel I couldn't get a standalone pic heres the link for the MONZA PACESETTER

how do you break a glasspack in?

Unless you have the HID flux capacitors you don't have to worry about it.

You have a lot to learn about cars, my friend. Perhaps you should look into blacksmithing instead.

You don't "break in" any muffler. Sometimes the tone changes over time, but that is because the muffler is breaking down, not breaking in. If you intentionally destroy the packing, which functions as sound deadening material by damping sound waves as they travel through it, you are basically eliminating what little sound damping capability the muffler had. Don't do it.

Glasspacks are not high performance mufflers. They are often more effective as resonators (used to change the tone) than as mufflers (used to lower the volume). If you use a glasspack as a primary muffler, it will usually sound absolutely terrible on anything but a very old, very low compression, very low-revving engine...I'm talking about pre-war stuff here. If you have a '41 Ford with a 59AB flathead running about 8:1 compression, a pair of Cherry Bomb glasspacks is just what you need. It will sound like a grizzly bear gargling honey. If that's not what you drive, keep shopping.

I know that there are still old guys in corner muffler shops and pimply-faced kids working at AutoZone who will tell you that a glasspack is a great high performance muffler because you can see right through it. Believe me, they are wrong. Most of them don't know doodoo from apple butter about engineering. That's why they work at corner muffler shops and AutoZone. Do not seek technical advice from the D students of the automotive world.

I was willing to believe there was a break in for glass packs.....I guess there is no hope. I had to get my car inspected last week, So i ordered the cheapest muffler from summit racing and a mandrel J-bend pipe. It was a Flow-tech redhot glass pack ($18.95). It sounds great till 3500rpm and then WTH IS THAT NOISE!?!?. It sounds horrible.

Not at all. I am not attacking anyone here. I'm just suggesting that you turn off the torch, set the hammer down, and study up a little before you break something or waste a bunch of time and money.

I know I come off pretty harsh, but my goal is to raise the level of knowledge and understanding in this forum, not to raise people's self-esteem. I would rather spread good information and prevent mistakes than just tell people what they want to hear and pat them on the back as they destroy their cars. It's more important to me, and more beneficial to you, that I tell you the truth. And the truth is that if you think using a torch and hammer to beat up a muffler will improve it in any way, you need to spend some time reading and learning before you ruin your car or hurt someone.

a torch and a hammer is not going to solve anything honestly putting the glasspack on seemed like a good idea at the time (6 yrs. ago) but honestly I wish I hadn't. I was looking for a deeper sound and I didnt want a fart can. Don't abuse the 2 just save some money to get something like the Pacesetter. The glass packs have been around since the 60s they're not intended for a high revving engine. It sounds like a beast but as far as daily driving I focus more on amping the stereo up just to tune it out. I'm not sure what you're trying to acheive by "breaking it in" but it'll get more quiet as you drive.

I give a thumbs down to glass packs. Not because of hearsay, but because I have one on my 2.

It's pretty quiet at idle. Sounds great till 3500rpm and then LOUD AND NASTY. Sounds like a poor civic with a fart can at 3.5k rpm+

Anything with mandrel bends, pulse tuned, and a good hi flow muffler (i think HKS do a quiet hi-flo jobbie, and theres a remote controll muffler u can get VAREX by x-force i think) tho not sure if they are made to suit AW11's lol..
