Manual to Automatic
Anyone have a guide how to switch from a Manual to Automatic?
I have an '85 and would like to switch it to auto so my fiance can drive it also (she refuses to learn how to drive a stick) |

LOL that sucks, I would not do it in my opinion but to swap it i think you have to get the auto tranny, remove the clutch and i think you need a different fly wheel...any one correct me if I'm wrong

Flexplate is what replaces the flywheel. You were in the right ballpark. I am guessing that you would have to change the ECU as well and wiring might become an issue.

If she wants to drive a sports car, she should learn manual, IMO. Swapping the transmission is a pain, and for the time, effort and cost involved, it'd be easier (and possibly cheaper) to get another MKI that's already automatic. You also have the benefit of auto's being undesirable for that kind of car, so you can talk down a seller.

Personally, I wouldnt want my pregnant wife/fiance driving the mr2. I dont have a pregnant wifey or fiance but I just dont feel the mr2 is safe enough. Thats just my opinion but it came from every girls opinion of being in my car. They all felt it as being a death trap because it had no air bags and is so small.

You are also going to have to change the brackets in the engine bay and the cables are different to(automatic has the one cable and manual has two). I just finished doing the oposite conversion (auto to manual) on my MR2. The brackets on the inside of the car holding the shifter are different as well.
Dropping the tranny is a long process and you have to support your engine because three of the motor mounts hold the tranny and only 1 holds the engine. Not fun to do at all. |
