Malfunctioning thermostat inside the housing on top of the tranny. Never go aftermarket with thermostats. Yota oem is the only way to go.
Check to see if the previous owner removed the oil cooler. Its a 3" black tube about 18" long that is on the firewall mounted almost in front of the exhaust manifold. Look for oil in your antifreeze, and vice versa. Smell the exhaust . . . sweet smelling? check oil level . . . check for paper, animal nests blocking the radiator. |

The thermostat is over the transmission. Not over the alternator.

I cant take a pic of the right part right now. I'll probably be able to look at it tomorrow or Sunday if you dont find it out by then.

i got it right this time. i dont have a camera or i woulda taken pics for whoever might want/need em, but i can tell you how to get to it and ****. you just remove the battery and for me the k&n airbox extention hose thing. the thermostat housings the part with the engine air bleeder valve. take the hose off that runs from that towards the firewall and hooks under the battery tray. remove the 2 10mm bolts that hold the thermostat housing to the other side of the housing, pop the thermostat out.

typically what happens is that there will be an air pocket in your coolant system.... it is those pockets that get hot and expand (coolant/water will expand, but not as much as air). So, when a hot spot comes through the extra pressure is released through the cap into the overflow tank....
further... make sure your overflow tank cap isn't on backwards (internally). I use non-toyota thermostats all the time.... Toyota doesn't make them, they just buy them from a supplier..... when you bleed your system, make sure you do it for a LONG time and/or use the proper techniques described online if you don't have an airlift tool.... air pockets hide quite well in these cars..... |
