Engine Noise

Hi people i need help i have 86 mr2 is not super charge and when i Accelerate i hear rattling noise on the engine can someone help me.

any way that you could provide a video or even an audio clip of the sound? it would help us help you.

also, if you have the specific engine you have in ur 2 info given to us, that also helps.

things to listen/look for:

is this a constant rattle?

is it a sort of scraping noise that sounds like it is timed with the RPM of the engine?

does it go away when I keep the car at a stable speed?

could be anything from the dash to random bolts rusting off and bouncing all over >>

Throw-out bearings going "dry" can give off this noise, if so, when you lightly put your foot into the clutch it should go away.?

Need more symptom identification. We can help you if you give us more input.

As you can see from all the responses, a rattling noise can be caused by all kinds of things, from loose wrenches to things inside the engine/transmission, loose heat shields and exhaust, or even suspension. I suggest you start the engine, leave it in neutral (parking brake on) and look inside your engine compartment. Rev the engine while you're looking at it, and maybe you'll be able to narrow down where the rattle is coming from. Heck, you may be able to see something loose and vibrating, put your hand on it and the sound goes away. If you can't find the rattle, it may be worth getting someone to rev the engine while you're under the car so you can look for something loose down there. Wear nice thick gloves if you're going to try grabbing hold of the exhaust or heat shields. If the "rattle" increases speed with the engine speed, it's probably something that moves with the engine. This would be a good time to listen to the bottom-end of your engine, if the rattle is coming from inside your oilpan it's probably time for new bearings.

If the rattle doesn't happen when you're revving the engine, but only when the car is actually accelerating, look to the suspension and motor mounts.
