It has benzonite clay in it,......It is the Wal Mart of motor oils. Great bulk oil used by most quick lubes...because it is cheap.

so really which is better Mobil 1 or Amsoil? They both run ads bashing each other since they are competitors.

Has anyone managed to pull apart an engine that had been running Amsoil for most of it's life?
Proof's in the pudding. OHhh .. pudding .. that sounds good .. |

Hi Ben,
I just became an Amsoil dealer so I could use it in my 2. I don't think I will sell it. Reading up on it, it has the best of all worlds. I used to be in the Air Force and worked on Jet Engines, of course they have been using Synthetic oils for almost 50 years. Recommended is changing oil 1 time a year or about 10-15000 miles. What do you think, I am using something now, and after 1000 miles I will change to the Amsoil. Herb |

I didn't know you were in the Air Force Herb! I tried to join the Air Force/Navy to work on jet engines as a matter of fact, I couldn't because of health reason though
![]() I only know Amsoil by reputation. I hear that they are the best and I am sure that if Amsoil says it is good for 10-15K miles, they must mean it. I back Valvoline because I have been using it for over 4 years when I worked at Toyota. When an 04 Toyota that only comes to us comes in for an oil changes with over 80K miles and I see that the oil is still pretty much unoxidized, I trust it. And this is the conventional oil. |

Hey Ben,
I had a choice assignment, I was a CrewChief worked on the 104, RF4C, Sabreliners, T-33's 106's and at a time work on all the transit jets that came into and out of RAF Alconbury England. I enjoyed is a lot, so much, I didn't re-enlist. Herb |

Wow, you worked on the Phantom II? It was the GE J79 that got me to want to work on jets!

Ben,
I started with the F4C, forgot about the Quail, B-52G-&H, Gam52 J52 engine, J85 GE, great engines, all the way thru the pig RB-66 with J35 engine, a real pig, 300 hr Hot service tear down. We were tearing down engines every 300 hours then the J79 came in. 1st tear down was 600 hrs, bumped to 1200 hrs, bumped to 16oohrs, all ceramic AB's no cracks nothing. Boundrylayer air was a problem until fixed then, clear sailing. Lots of free time thats why I transfered to transit time, A lot more action, every plane was different. I did enjoy it, just couldn't take the BS and could make more $$$$$$ in the States. Herb |

I'm not really hell bound on using any particular brand. My car isn't turbo'd or high-powered so most of the time I just get whatever synthetic (or synthetic blend) is on sale. I do not purchase Pennzoil or off-brand oil though, I don't "trust" it I guess.
A lot of people will rag on me for this but I also change my oil every 2,000-3,000 miles even when I'm using really expensive stuff. It has over 184,000 miles so I'm afraid it will break down and cause leaks faster than a much younger engine. Even the Mobil 1 and Royal Purple are a little discolored after 2-3K miles so I just change it. Wasting money FTW! Castrol GTX Mobil 1 Royal Purple Valvoline Syntec They've all seen my engine. |

lol, that is too often for me. I am just in the habit of checking my oil all the time, and when I notice it's a little dark I take 30 minutes and change it out. My work uses Quaker State semi-synthetic I can get for free but the filters are really bad quality so I buy Wix or Mobil 1 filters at the store. If I want to do it on my day off I just go and buy the oil, the few free changes I get make up for it I think.

I use Castrol, and don't change it in the winter (it's too cold for me to bother... other than topping it off) Unless its a real nice warm day that I've got free.
But then, I have a 200k+ 5SFE. So I'm kinda more focused on a replacement engine. However the 'ol camry engine seems to be in pretty good shape ![]() |
