in this case it can be called opinion but i am sure if he found some resources he could make it solid fact. all in all though he is right, why pay $35 for an oil change when you can pay $35 for better oil and do it yourself?things this simple i will def be doing myself to save up for the things i can't do myself.

Mobile 1 5-30 full synthetic with a NAPA Gold (Wix) filter is what I use, and to me paying someone to change my oil is like paying someone to do my laundry.

I live in a condo and the board will yell and/or fine you if they catch you working on your car in the parking lot.
I will have a house with a garage soon enough. Then I will deffinitely do most everything myself. |

DIY FTW....if i can do a head gasket on a mkII in my driveway i can do an oil change...especially cause you dont even need to get dirty...pull the drain plug off and get your hand out of there...and then the filters on top...no mess, no worries...

Slightly related. I did 6 oil changes yesterday... then I went out and bought some drift wheels/tires with the earned money.

I bought two stock wheels with two tires at 50% life for $30. Those tires were pretty cheap. |

for those who lives in apartments and not allowed to do car work, id suggest you to be-friend any local mr2 owner or car enthusiast who has can. otherwise there is no excuse to not do your own work :P
p.s. unless your a cripple then that's not possible |

I do my own
However, each time getting the filter off is the biggest pain in the ass ever, work themselves to tight to get off by hand and there isnt enough room to put in any tool. It was easier to do the Cambelt. Anyone else have troubles on the 3SGE oil filters? |

yes I do!!! It's not difficult. The only time I had a problem doing this was when I changed the filter for the first time... the previous owner took it to a garage I think but, when I tried to change the filter felt like it was superglued or something!!.. It was that hard to remove!. Anyway since that day no problems at all and let only qualified personnel touch my engine... and me of course

Mobil 1 Synth from Wal Mart and K&N filter from Autozone. I consider it bonding time with my two.

basicly, there is a bolt on your oil pan, losten it and drain the oil(its under the car so you might need stands, i used a lift). when its drained you should then change the filter if needed. from what i been told, the filter needs to be only hand tight. then you poor oil back in(after tightening the bolt and oil filter obviously). measure after the first say, 2 quarts using the dip stick and just add as much as is needed to get to full. over filling is bad i hear.
some things to watch out for: there is a rubber ghasket thats on the oil filter. make sure when you take the old one off, make sure its not stuck on the car. if you put the other filter on and left this rubber on there, you'll leak oil and make a huge mess. never go under a car unless its on jacks stands, some would argue this but just be safe and don't. don't do a super long drive before so the engine can cool down. i am sure some people will add advice for you. a job like this is worth doing yourself. you'll know its getting done, what filter/oil your using, and you'll know that some prick didn't just charge you and not change anything. GL PS ** a trick: push in on the bolt as your loosening it. once it gets out, you'll feel it clicking. after you feel this you should be able to remove it quickly without making to much a mess on yourself** Last edited by traintech86; 10-28-2009 at 07:27 PM.. |
