Sometimes people get under there with emergency compact jacks which are very unstable and are easily tipped over if you aren't careful, or with some rocking of the car wich can easily happen during an oil change. Or you can just have a really ****ty floor jack that can fail right on top of you.

I do my own oil changes, use mobile 1 10-40 since I only drive in summer months and toyota filter, I wouldn't trust anyone to touch my oil change because they would never find the filter, its in my mk1 passenger quarter panel. Also be careful if you use fram filters, I've seen a few of them explode and plug the oil passage to the head with no external leaking

I've heard of Frams having bad treads and falling off. I usually just use the OE filter.

I had it done when I first got my car because I didn't know where to dispose of the old oil (still don't know where to take it). I ended up having to take it to 2 shops. The first was HILARIOUS - The guy got in, popped the frunk, walked around and lifted the frunk hood, and was astonished to see nothing but a spare tire. He shook his head as he closed the frunk, got back in the car, popped the rear trunk, walked to the back, lifted the trunk lid, and was EVEN MORE astonished to find a basketball and a gym bag. He put his hand on his hips, shook his head and muttered something under his breath, shut the trunk, got back in the car, looked around for a minute and called over a SECOND guy, who then repeated the process... I was laughing my butt off! I went over, popped the hood, showed them the engine, closed the hood, and drove away laughing (and of course DID NOT let them touch ANYTHING). I then took it to a shop my buddy's uncle (who owns 3 used car lots) takes his cars to. I have only put 2k on it since, but I will be doing my next oil change myself. I hear that you can take your old oil to Oreilly's, but I'm not sure. Anyone know of where to dispose of the old oil?

that's funny about Fram.... I worked at a parts store and never had anyone try to return one as faulty....
also... when you buy your filter yourself, make sure it is correct.... there are a lot of cars that have slight specifications where if you get the wrong one, it feels like it threads on -- until it builds pressure and blows off... that isn't the filters' fault but that of the person who looked it up. I also worked at a shop... we used the Napa filters (which are Wix) but I removed tons of Frams and they never had a problem. The only thing I have heard bad about Fram that has any truth to it.... is that the filtration in them is actually too good and can catch too much... thus restricting flow. In at least a first gen MR2... the filter has nothing to do with directing oil to the head.... the oil comes through the motor, goes through the adapter to the filter... out the filter, out the adapter, to the cooler, which dumps directly into the pan.... |

I've removed plenty of Frams that didn't have a problem. I've just heard of faulty Frams.

i do my own everything. oil changes all the way up to engine swaps.(i have been working on cars since i was 12) i dont have a lift, but a nice napa jack and some larger jackstands will get the car up pretty high. i use either oem toyota filter or a napa gold filter, and when i had my 5s, i used castrol gtx high mileage and now with my 3sge, i use mobil 1 10w30. i have worked at "iffy lube" and i will NEVER take my car to anywhere like that ever. i quit after 3 weeks of seeing the stupid stuff they do or forget and then brushing it off when i would say something. just do it yourself, its one of the easiest things you can do and it gets you closer to your car. look at it this way, we all love our 2's just like we love our women right? would you want some stranger sticking his hand up your girls skirt and poking around? didnt think so.

D.I.Y. FOR LIFE!!!! Mob1 Full Syn, and Mob1 Extended Service Filter.
I researched the K&N filters along side the Mob1, and the Mobile 1 took the cake on single and multi-pass efficiency. I'm sure K&N took the trade-off to have higher fluid transfer, instead of filtering abilities. |

hahaha i run fram and havent had a problem yet.
i do it myself. always have. iffy lube cranks it on... oh and by the way, my friend took her car to iffy lube for an inspection. forget what kinda car, but it supposedly need PS fluid. the car was electrical assist P/S and so we took it in and made them eat their own mistake. we ordered just the power steering fluid flush. man were they mad. they couldnt find the cap. there wasnt one. they were ripping her off cuz she was a she. now she got all the other stuff on the page done for free (ATF flush, oil change, brake pads, calipers, rotors, lines, master cylinder, booster, coolant flush and mny more) and 20 free oil changes. never take your car to a place. DIY if possible. oh and dispose of the oil... take it to iffy lube and tell em to dispose of it. theyll put it in the next customers car probably, but at least not my car. i take it to them in buckets all the time. they tke 5gal at a time. |
