Gear grinds

When I quickly change gear regardless of what gear, the gearbox will give off an awful grinding sound. When I change gears slowly its ok.

What is the fault likely to be and the cost of repair?

mine doesnt grind but it seems a lot harder for it to go in gear. i almost have to force it into gear with the clutch pressed down all the way. is this normal?

Is your clutch slipping at all?

Flush your transmission fluid and then replace it with a higher quality gear oil. Also check your shifter cables and shifter bushings.

+1
Redline MT-90 has a very good long-standing reputation. You will need almost 3 quarts. And take the fill bolt out before the drain bolt - just in case

Ok...That is like the worst, when you go get 'everything' you need and then go back and realize you didn't get enough to get the job done. Keep us posted and let us know if the problem diminishes or goes away.

True! Thats why I suggested to take the fill bolt off FIRST.... I have read stories of guys taking the fill bolt off LAST and then discovering it being stuck and being in a pickle after their car has NO tranny fluid in there.

ok none has actually answered the original question yet
the problem is you have worn syncros (very commom)
they rub together to slow the gears down or speed them up so they are spinning at exactly the right speed so they mesh with out hitting at different speeds

as you rev higher the speed difference is greater so the lack of syncro is more apparent
norm it shows on the downshift into second first this can be somewhat remedyed by a good oil (MT-90) and double clutching down shifts

but all in all the only way to get it properly fixed is tear the box down and replace them

Yep, worn synchros. They are quite expensive to have replaced, so it's not really worth doing unless it's *really* bad. Other than that you can try replacing the trans fluid with some good stuff like Redline MT90- that can help, but the only way to fix it entirely is by a rebuild.

Definitely try the MT-90, but also look into replacing the shift cable bushings. If there's enough slop, the cables won't move the transmission far enough into gear. I replaced mine today and it cured my second gear grind.
