MKI vs MKII experience?
I have a problem. I'm trying to buy an MR2 but they're all at least an hour drive away. And I don't have a car (was totaled a few weeks ago, thus I'm looking for a new car).
My good buddy is willing to drive me out but only this Saturday. I'm still undecided between the Mk1 and the Mk2, but because of my situation I don't really have the ability to test drive both. Can anyone who has driven both give me a comparison of their driving "feels" (considering N/As only)? I'm already quite keen on the technical differences. Thanks. P.S. Or if anyone in Gainesville is willing to let me see their car, hehe. |

posting from recent experience a mk1 supercharged has abit better acceleration than a n/a mk2 with lsd but the mk2 has better stopping distance
also from experience the mk2 will be followed by clutch smoke accelerating while the mk1 will be followed by sparks coming of the exhaust that just fell off and when braking the mk2 will jump 2 feet sideways instantly while the mk1 will just lock the wheels up and take 4 mins to stop |

N/A for N/A the mk1 is a LOT more fun to drive, in my opinion, from my time in both cars... I've spent a lot more time driving mk1's than mk2's though, but I can feel the weight and handling differances bigtime. A lightly (and I mean very lightly... exhaust, cone filter, coil, KYB GR2 struts, good tires) modded mk1 N/A will easily pull on a mk2 n/a with similar mods (if you know how to drive it and keep the RPM's high like the car is intended to be driven). I've tried this theory out with multiple mk2's with very skilled drivers in the mk2's... always can pull on them. I've never spun my N/A or lost control of the car... feels like an extension of the driver. My Supercharged on the other hand I have spun a couple of times, but I was playing when it came around on me and even then it was a very controllable spin in which I was easily able to keep the car in the road and to 360 it back the right direction in the right lane out the other side of the curve... I was grinning like a fool the whole time.
Plenty of mk1's came with climate control too... just have to find them. I've got a climate control unit out back right now laying on my hardtop's roof in the shed. 85-86 climate control that is. Haven't seen it on the 87-89 cars yet on one I've parted or owned. That said... my buddies definately love their mk2's, but the ones that drive their cars hard are keeping an eye out for a mk1 as well now (they want both... comfort of mk2 daily driving and fun of mk1 for spirited drives). Especially the buddies that have driven mine, then have to go back to their mk2's. The mk2 has better torque and is a little better off-the-line, but of course has a much lower rpm redline. Personally I like the mk1 power band/high RPM deal and hearing the 4age screaming back there is amazing. I drive my N/A very hard and nothing seems to break other than routine stuff, and I went through a set of wheel bearings at a lower mileage than most I've seen being replaced on the boards before. I've got a fairly minor oil leak finally, but I've put 30,000 HARD miles on the poor little car (130,000 miles on it now) and can't seem to break anything of signifigance (aside from the timing belt which hadn't been replaced until 100K miles/17 years). I'm sure some might disagree, but I've never had more fun with any car than a mk1... and I've owned 3 Corvettes (one LPE supercharged 396 GrandSport), 3 Mustangs (65,93 notch, 95 that would spit flames 3 feet out the tailpipes), a 74 Camaro, etc. and NOTHING was anywhere near as fun overall as these little mk1's. You feel the road a bit more in the mk1 than in the mk2... that includes pot holes and bumps, but not enough do bother me. Body styling is a different matter, stock for stock I like the mk2 better looks wise... in fact when I got my N/A mk1 I was looking for a 93-95 mk2 but drove the mk1 and fell in love. That was around 4-5 years ago now and I only seem to keep buying more mk1's, lol. I modded the body to my tastes and now I'm absolutely thrilled with the little thing. |

Thanks for messing up my derailing guys
![]() But seriously thanks. I think price will be the biggest factor for me (college student!). I will get a Mk1 (this weekend, hopefully!) unless somehow there's a clean SW that is cheaper than any AW I find lol. Although I have no problems affording a Mk2, I feel like the extra $500 or so can be better spent on maintenance, rubber, and track days. And food. And sex. |
