typical answers for question numer one would be:
Improved Daily Driver
Viscous Daily Driver
Daily Driver/ Weekend Racer
Drag Racer
Trailer Queen
Jackstand Queen (picked that one up here in the forum)
Auto X / Time Attack Car
Ect....

Second Question:
$3k-$5k
$5k-10k
$10K-$20k

You also need to consider the term over which you intend to make you modifications. Some routes lend themselves better to a few hundred bucks here and there over the course of a few years, while others require big piles of cash up front.

How long would a drag car, autocross / TA, circuit and aggressive daily driver last compared to each other?

If you want power and reliability (not neccessarily ease of maintenence) then there is no replacement for displacement.

If the motor in your car now isn't giving you any trouble, why don't you get yourself a V6 and work on a standard rebuild?

Rather than aiming for some number of horsepower why don't you look at what you have to spend on upgrades and see where that gets you or think of a setup and turbo you would like to run and spend the money on that and get what you get. If you set a number you will probably never be happy with it because you will get a dyno figure that means **** all else in terms of driving the car, there are more than horsepwer numbers to how a car acts under the hammer.

Agreed. Build the car so it's fun to drive and FEELS how you want it to feel.

Then find out how much power it has.

You very well can set, for example, 350 HP as a goal, make it a loose guide rather than your hard-and-fast measurement. Plus, you'll always be wanting to do something to get more power.

I don't get why you don't pick a power to weight ratio of a car you'd like but couldn't afford (Lotus Exige or like) and try for that. Power delivery and ultimate power are completely useless measures if the power:

A) Doesn't get to the ground effectively

B) Completely overpowers the chassis/suspension/brakes

C) Is predicated on being an internet hero

Someone with more money will always be faster. Go for balance and experience the nirvana that only comes through a well setup car.

The reason I ask this is because I need to start somewhere. Enough input and I have a working hinge.

It seems pretty clear to me, although he didn't provide any dynos, nor did he say if his boost was the same after he unbolted the b-pipe.

I can see the stock turbo muffler being a 20 whp restriction on a full bolt-on 3rd gen. He also didn't remove a clogged cat because there is no cat after the b-pipe and his ATS B-pipe doesn't have a cat in it IIRC.

taking on to yours, you can add some stickers, and get like 5 hp, I've heared that a few times on this thread, and in other places. I'm still a newb here, but I'm aiming for about 450whp, person I bought it from advised a tune, and car should be pushing 320whp, but it's just hear say right now.

my advice is take it slow. start with upgrading/fixing any thing thats broken or worn out like brakes, struts, bushings ect and do a lot of resurch for each mod.
while your doing this you should get a better idea of what your are going to be doing most with your 2 and what your bigger mods down the road will do to help with that.

i spent about 5 years just upgrading stuff that was broken on my 2 befor i started buying the stuff that i wonted but didnt need.
koni struts, eibach springs and poly bushings wer about the first thing i did, then my turbo stated going out so i got a ct27 and KO dp to go with it. then my clutch started slipping and that snowballed in to a compleat tranny rebuild with kaaz 2 way, clutchmasters stage 3 and fidanza lwfw and so on.

PS. my 2 makes 232 WHP, 217 torque at 16psi and thats plenty to get your self in troble.

This is what I'm doing, so I'll throw my weight behind it. :P

Which Eibachs are you using, sport or pro?

Also, I'm thinking of doing an engine swap (way down the road; this old, bone-stock 5S is proving to be almost all the fun I need) for power/weight, but on the other side: slimming down the pounds. Anyone have mass figures for various Toyota engines?

I'm not planning to race my 2, I just want a super-fun daily driver who likes to shed her top now and again. I'm already most of the way there, lol. If I can make it occasionally embarrass a doofus Mustang driver, so much the better.
