Additives make a huge difference, not just octane. Older high compression motors used to run fairly low octane but ran fine cause of lead additives etc, outlawed now and some of the older junk HATES cheap unleaded gas, my 327 pings just above idle on 91, 95 it's alright and 98 it goes like a bat outta hell cause I can bump the timing. Gull has the best here, and probably mobil synergy 8000 (98 with 10% ethanol)

My turbo car luuuuuurves 98, 328 can only run that cause anything less it detonates and pings like mad. 10.5:1 with a turbo doesn't like bad petrol. I'll get some AV gas for it soon I think.

Just got a tank of E85 from a BP station I think. It was 2.79 .20 cheaper than the low grade stuff.

105 octane E85 from holiday. It's typically $0.65/gal cheaper than regular unleaded, $0.95 cheaper than premium, depending where you buy.

I put 100 octane for an airport in my old Mazda one time. It ran it hot but I did notice more power in that little motor.

I did notice a few things in my NA
Exxon gas feels WAAAY more powerful then other brands but doesn't last long
Chevron Gas feels smoother but not as powerful
Shell lasts me the longest of all but im not feeling much.
I use Shell because i get a few more miles out of it.
Its not proven or anything its just something i have noticed in my cars through out the years.

My TL is so temperamental it'll foul plugs. I guess that's it's way of saying "did you not read premium on the gas lid? That kroger stuff might say 93 but it taste like 91." Kind of slander really, mainly the redline that gets the plugs....

In Sweden, you rate your gasoline's octane on the RON rating. IN the USA, we use R+M/2 ((RON + MON)/2). They yield different ratings obviously.

Quote:
In most countries, including Australia and all of those in Europe, the "headline" octane rating shown on the pump is the RON, but in Canada, the United States and some other countries, like Brazil, the headline number is the average of the RON and the MON, called the Anti-Knock Index (AKI, and often written on pumps as (R+M)/2).
It's not the gas is bad. It's rated differently here in North American than almost anywhere else. 91 RON = 87 AKI, 93 RON = 89 AKI, 95 RON = 91 AKI, 98 RON = 93 AKI

Here in Oregon, we have 92 octane (AKI) generally as the highest grade.

As for what brand, I normally have run Chevron Premium (92 AKI) in the past, though I've ran Union 76 92 AKI and Shell 92 AKI before.

I just found out there is a gas station across the river which sells premium 92 octane (AKI) which is straight gas, no ethanol added!! The cost is much higher, but I might switch to that. No gasohol = worth a try IMO I don't care for E85. It can't start for crap in cold weather (E85 has igniting issues below 59 degrees F), and ethanol stuffs phase separation within a period of months at best (which is why it has a short shelf life), whereas gas with no ethanol blended can last years. In fact, ethanol's cost whether starting issues is why the US government doesn't allow E100 as a standard fuel, only E85. In countries like Sweden where E85 is more common, they discontinue E85 in the cold months and switch to E70, since the higher gasoline content helps cold weather startability.
