Exclamation I need your help

Today while driving i could smell coolant, looked at my temp needle and it was fine just below half way. As i got to school and parked my car the needle shot all the way up, so I left it alone came back 3 hrs later and everything was fine. on the way back home it shot back up but if i drove fast it would shoot back down. I pulled over to see if i saw any leaks but nothing. I did not drive on for any more then a min pulled over got it towed. what can it be? by the way this is a 93 mr2 non turbo 5 speed

it could be a couple of things, low to no coolent level, bad theromosat, bad water pump, bad radator cap, leaky coolnet hoese, or worse a blown head gasket?...

how was it driving before it started overheating?

Severe loss of power = Head Gasket
Rapid spike in heat or random changing = Thermostat
If it does the above and leaks water = Water pump

Some times it's a little of both that leads to a blown head gasket.
Ask my 240sx of back in the day.

I would just change the thermastat. sounds like it's still wanting to work but gets stuck closed or is stuck closed.

Was there any smoke?

I would change out yoru thermostat and even the temp sending unit. Both parts are fairly inexpensive and can be ordered through Aaron Willis at Lithia Toyota (awillis@lithia.com)

Im suprised no one caught on to this or mentioned this little statement,

So your basically saying that if you drive slow, the temp climbs but if you get up to higher speed, it'll drop back down????

If so, then the first place I would look is the radiator fans. The MR2 already has a design flaw with the way the radiator is ducted, fans not coming on only make this situation worse..

The thermostat would not be effected by speed.

9 times out of 10, if a engine heats up at low vehical speeds and cools back down at higher vehical speeds, its an airflow issue through the radiator.
